Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as India Women’s Cricket Captain
Harmanpreet Kaur has announced her resignation as the captain of India’s women’s cricket team across all formats. The 37-year-old took on the permanent captaincy in 2016 after initially serving as a temporary leader. Her leadership period is marked by significant achievements including historic wins at the ODI World Cup and clinching the gold medal at the Asian Games.
In a detailed social media statement, Kaur expressed that stepping down was a tough choice. She emphasized the dedication she poured into the team, saying, “I gave this team everything I had. I carried the responsibility with pride, and I will always be grateful for the privilege of leading Indian women’s cricket.”
Team’s Future and Leadership Transition
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been reviewing the team's recent performances and has devised a future plan. A meeting chaired by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia involved Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and head coach Amol Muzumdar. Though no official word has confirmed if the resignation was requested during this session, it followed closely after it.
Smriti Mandhana is anticipated to take over the captaincy role in all formats – Test, ODI, and T20.
Harmanpreet’s Reflections on Captaincy
"This is not an easy decision. It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I have given everything I had to this team and to Indian women’s cricket — my blood, my sweat, my time, and many times, a part of my own game and personal ambitions."
She acknowledged the challenges of balancing individual ambitions with team responsibilities, often putting personal goals aside for the greater good of the squad. The role required tough choices, sometimes misunderstood or costly, but always intended to strengthen the team and help teammates grow.
"I have seen the lowest moments, the heartbreak, the criticism, the doubts and the days when nothing seemed to go our way. And I have also experienced the highest highs - the victories, the celebrations, the pride of representing our country, and the moments that made every sacrifice worth it."
Kaur left the captaincy with mixed feelings but peace, confident that the team possesses talent, character, and belief for a bright future.
Commitment to Continue Playing
Despite stepping down from the leadership role, Harmanpreet Kaur made clear her intention to keep playing for India. She ended her message expressing gratitude to everyone who supported her journey and reaffirmed her passion for cricket.
"Captaincy may end today, but my love for Indian cricket never will. Thank you to every teammate, coach, support staff, management, BCCI, family members, every single fan who stood by me through the highs and lows. Blood. Sweat. Sacrifice. Pride. I gave it all, now, I'm ready to play for the love of the game again. Captaincy ends. The journey continues."
