Ilkay Gündogan Involved in Montpellier Ownership Bid
Montpellier HSC, a decade removed from their Ligue 1 title fairytale and now marooned in Ligue 2, stand on the brink of a major ownership shake-up – with a familiar Premier League name involved.
According to L’Équipe, British investment fund GSS are in advanced talks to buy into the French club, with former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan part of the bid. Ex-Arsenal, Burnley and Ipswich Town player Daniel Karbassiyoon is also involved in the project.
Nicollin’s reluctant search for help
The story stretches back to the 2024/25 season. Under mounting financial and sporting pressure, owner Laurent Nicollin went public with a call for fresh capital, circulating a ten-page dossier to leading French investment banks.
“We are throwing a hook into the sea,” he wrote, making clear that he did not initially intend to sell the club outright. Yet the tone was pragmatic. Faced with the club’s decline, Nicollin admitted he might have to accept becoming a minority shareholder. “Our fall has to be less painful at the end of the year,” he added, a stark line that captured Montpellier’s slide.
That slide accelerated. Relegated to Ligue 2 for the 2025/26 campaign, Montpellier failed to bounce back at the first attempt. They did not even reach the promotion playoffs, sharing that disappointment with Stade de Reims, who had dropped with them.
The missed return to the top flight has hardened realities around the Nicollin project. This summer, La Paillade may no longer be fully in family hands.
GSS move in as uncertainty hangs over structure
The pressure finally told in the boardroom. L’Équipe report that an agreement between GSS and Nicollin is now edging closer, with talks focused on the scale of the British fund’s entry.
Key details remain unresolved. It is not yet confirmed whether GSS will pursue a complete takeover or limit themselves to a significant minority stake. What is clear is that their bid is being fronted in part by high-profile football figures, with Gündogan lending both name and expertise to the operation and Karbassiyoon adding his own experience from English football and scouting.
Montpellier, once a symbol of smart, locally rooted success in France, now find themselves at a crossroads shaped by international capital. The next contract Nicollin signs will decide whether he stays as the face of the club or steps back into the role of minority shareholder in a new era driven from abroad.
