Manchester United's Pursuit of Mateus Fernandes Complicated by Real Madrid

Manchester United’s hopes of landing Mateus Fernandes have taken a heavy hit – and the damage has come from Madrid, not London.

Florentino Perez has comfortably won re-election as Real Madrid president, a result that does more than simply preserve the status quo at the Bernabeu. It clears the path for Jose Mourinho to make a dramatic return to the club once he leaves Benfica, 13 years after his first spell ended in acrimony. This time, he is expected to arrive with a very clear target in mind.

Mateus Fernandes

The 21-year-old West Ham midfielder has been widely tipped to leave the London Stadium after the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League. A player of his profile and potential was never likely to linger in the Championship for long, and the list of suitors has reflected that reality. United have tracked him, seeing in the Portuguese playmaker a long-term piece in a rebuilt midfield.

Now they may find themselves outgunned.

Mourinho is understood to be a firm admirer of his compatriot and is expected to push Real towards a move once he is officially installed. When Real Madrid and Manchester United go head-to-head for a continental talent, history rarely favours the English side. The Bernabeu still carries a unique pull, even after a season without silverware.

West Ham’s stance has been clear enough: they want as much as £80 million if they are to cash in this summer. Relegation, though, weakens their hand. The final fee is likely to land well below that figure once negotiations truly begin, especially with the player eyeing the exit and elite clubs circling.

The prospect of Mourinho returning only sharpens the situation. He is set to replace Alvaro Arbeloa, who could not turn around a difficult campaign after stepping in for Xabi Alonso mid-season. Real’s midfield is already stacked with some of the game’s premier operators, but that has never stopped the club from adding another jewel when the opportunity arises.

Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde, both at various points linked with moves to Old Trafford, are expected to stay put. Perez has made it clear they remain part of Real’s plans after internal discipline earlier this season, ending any realistic chance of United prising them away. That, in turn, increases the likelihood that Real look externally for fresh energy – and Fernandes fits the bill.

For Michael Carrick, the implications are obvious. United’s new manager has made midfield a priority area, with Atalanta’s Ederson close to joining as Casemiro prepares to depart. The Brazilian’s exit leaves both a leadership gap and a tactical one, and United had viewed Fernandes as a player capable of evolving into a central figure over the coming years.

Now, the landscape shifts. If Real move decisively, United may be forced to pivot.

Complicating matters further is the uncertainty around Manuel Ugarte. Signed in 2024 for around £50m, the Uruguayan has already been linked with a possible exit and could reportedly leave for half that fee. That kind of churn in the middle of the pitch makes the Fernandes pursuit feel even more important – and even more frustrating if it slips away.

One advantage in any chase for the West Ham man is timing. Fernandes is not part of Portugal’s squad for World Cup 2026, freeing him from the usual international distractions that can drag negotiations deep into the summer. His situation allows for a relatively clean, swift transfer process.

But the player holds the decisive card. With Real Madrid now looming, he can afford to wait, to see whether Mourinho’s return comes with a concrete bid from the Bernabeu. Manchester United want him. West Ham are ready to sell.

The question is whether the pull of Old Trafford can compete with the old magnetism of Madrid when Mourinho comes calling.
