Inter’s pursuit of Curtis Jones has stopped being a rumour and turned into a saga. Eight months in, the Italian champions are still circling Liverpool’s midfielder, driven above all by one man: Cristian Chivu.

This is not a passing fancy from the Inter coach. According to Corriere dello Sport, Chivu has made it clear to the club hierarchy that Jones is his man. In his eyes, the Englishman stitches together three elements Inter crave in one player: pace, technique, and sharp tactical reading. Inter already have midfielders who can run, pass, and press. Jones, Chivu believes, can do all of that with a slightly different edge, a profile the technical staff see as uniquely valuable in their current puzzle.

The noise around the deal grew louder when Jones sat out Liverpool’s friendly against Monaco. Officially, it was a hip problem. Unofficially, the explanation landed badly with a fanbase already on alert, and it poured petrol on the transfer talk. A simple absence in pre-season suddenly looked like a sign.

Inside the club, the situation feels even more strained. Sources suggest a split has opened up between Jones and Liverpool, and the gap is widening. Inter can wait. With Jones refusing to extend, his contract status opens a different door. If a deal cannot be struck in this window, the midfielder could agree a pre-contract in January and walk into Appiano Gentile for free next summer. That prospect tempts Inter’s directors: the player Chivu wants, at the price structure they prefer.

But waiting carries its own risks. Another club could step in. Liverpool could find a way to repair the relationship. Or the tactical needs of Inter’s season could shift.

Marotta and Ausilio are weighing it all. One route is patience and a potential bargain in 2025. The other is more aggressive: raise funds through departures, clear space in midfield, and go back to Liverpool with a stronger bid that hits closer to their demands.

The names are already on the table. If Frattesi or Asllani were to leave in the coming weeks, Inter’s financial picture would change, and so would Liverpool’s leverage. A sale or two could turn a slow-burning courtship into a concrete offer.

For now, the story hangs in that familiar summer limbo: a manager pushing, a player waiting, two clubs locked on price. Inter know exactly what Jones could give them. The question is whether they pay for that certainty now, or gamble that the same player will still be waiting for them when January comes.
