Ismail Kartal is back in the Fenerbahce dugout – officially, definitively, and far sooner than anyone expected.

Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim moved just as quickly. At a separate press conference, he rejected the resignation and threw his weight firmly behind Kartal.

"You saw the state Ismail was in. Can a person endure that much distress? They threw a water bottle at Ismail Kartal's head. We saw it. That is why he is upset. Ismail Kartal remains in his post. I said [to Kartal]: 'You will continue,' and that was that."
In one sentence, Yildirim both defended his manager and closed the door on any debate. The message to supporters and critics alike: the coach is hurting, but he is going nowhere.
