Jadon Sancho's Manchester United Exit: A Chapter Closed

Jadon Sancho’s Manchester United career is over. The club has confirmed it will not activate the one-year extension in his contract, drawing a firm line under one of the most expensive – and most curious – chapters of their recent history.

Sancho heads a list of departures that also includes Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, whose exits had already been flagged and were marked with on-pitch tributes from Michael Carrick after the final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest on 17 May. The retained and released list, published on Wednesday morning, simply made it official.

Sancho: A £73m signing who never truly arrived

Signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in July 2021, Sancho was supposed to be the winger United had chased for years. Instead, his Old Trafford story has been defined by absence as much as presence.

He has not played a meaningful game for United since 26 August 2023. His only appearance this year came in the 2024 Community Shield, when he was thrown on as an 83rd-minute substitute. A week after that August league outing, he was omitted from the squad for the trip to Arsenal, a decision that sparked a very public stand-off with then manager Erik ten Hag. The relationship never recovered.

On the pitch, Sancho’s career went elsewhere. The England international has spent the past three seasons on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa, an extraordinary tour that brought with it a unique distinction: he has played in a European final for all three clubs, each in a different competition. Most recently, he was part of the Aston Villa squad that beat Freiburg in last month’s Europa League final.

By the time United’s list dropped on Wednesday, his departure felt inevitable. Now it is written down in black and white.

Casemiro and Malacia follow him out

For Casemiro and Malacia, the confirmation was less dramatic, but still symbolic. Both had already been farewelled publicly, with Carrick leading the tributes after that final home game against Forest.

Casemiro arrived as a marquee name, a serial winner brought in to steady a midfield in flux. Malacia came as a younger, energetic full-back option. Their time at the club ends alongside Sancho’s, a trio whose exits underline the scale of the squad reset underway.

Pathways and promises for the next generation

The clear-out is not confined to the senior dressing room. Youngsters Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe will all leave when their contracts expire on 30 June. Aljofree, who spent the first half of last season on loan at Notts County, departs after time on the fringes of the first-team picture.

United have moved to secure some of their other prospects. Offers are on the table for Albert Mills and Dante Plunkett to sign professional deals in July, a sign of where the club sees its next wave emerging from.

There is, however, silence around England youth international Godwill Kukonki, the scorer of United’s goal in the FA Youth Cup final. His situation remains unresolved, a notable omission on a day of clarity.

Behind them, the next names are already lining up. It is anticipated that Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick will become scholars for the forthcoming season, the sons of Old Trafford royalty stepping formally into the academy system.

United’s list tells a familiar story: big names out, young faces in, another reset promised. The question now is whether this latest reshaping finally delivers the coherent future the club has been chasing since long before Jadon Sancho first walked through the door.
