Jim McGuinness to Continue as Donegal Football Manager for 2027

Jim McGuinness will stay on as Donegal senior football manager for the 2027 season, extending one of the most compelling modern stories in Gaelic football.

The decision, confirmed by Donegal GAA on Monday evening, means McGuinness will embark on a fourth year in his second spell in charge of the county. His current return was originally agreed as a three-year deal with an option of a fourth, and that option has now been activated.

Donegal also moved to secure continuity on the hurling front. Mickey McCann, who has been at the helm of the county’s senior hurlers since 2018, has been handed a further two-year term.

“Following a meeting of the County Committee, Donegal confirm the appointment of Michael McCann as Senior Hurling Manager for a two year term and Jim McGuinness as Senior Football manager for a one year term,” the county stated on social media.

McGuinness’s second coming has already reshaped Donegal’s trajectory. He has delivered back-to-back Ulster titles in 2024 and 2025 and guided the county to an All-Ireland final appearance in 2025, re-establishing them as a force at the top end of the game.

This year brought another piece of silverware. Donegal claimed the Football League Division One title in March, beating Kerry in the final and underlining their capacity to live with the elite.

Championship, though, told a harsher story.

Donegal’s Ulster defence ended abruptly with a quarter-final defeat to Down in the Ulster SFC, a result that jarred with their spring form. Their All-Ireland campaign then finished in Round 3 of the series, losing to Dublin after extra-time in a draining contest that left more regret than reward.

For McGuinness, now 53, the stakes remain high. The man who masterminded Donegal’s 2012 All-Ireland triumph in his first spell has restored belief and silverware, but the county’s support will expect those league and provincial gains to translate into a serious push for Sam again.

With McGuinness locked in for 2027 and McCann retained through to 2026, Donegal have chosen stability. The question now is simple: can that continuity turn promise back into the ultimate prize?
