JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United future is hanging by a thread – and the teenager looks in no mood to back down.
The 15-year-old, one of the most highly regarded prospects in United’s academy, is in Barcelona for face-to-face talks with the Spanish champions, in what stands as the strongest sign yet that he intends to force his way out of Old Trafford.
United, though, are digging in.
United fears turn into full-blown stand-off
Concerns inside Carrington about keeping Gabriel have been bubbling for weeks. On August 13, TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed United were worried about their ability to convince the youngster to stay, with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona all circling.
By mid-September, the situation had escalated. On September 15, TEAMtalk reported that Gabriel had formally told United he wants to leave and had gone as far as sending a formal notice requesting that his academy registration be cancelled with immediate effect.
If that request were granted, Gabriel would become a free agent just as he turns 16 next month.
United, however, retain his academy registration until the end of the 2026/27 season. That gives the club the right to challenge any attempt to rip up the agreement, a stance backed up this week by ESPN, who reported that United have no intention of cancelling the deal.
Behind the scenes, United have been preparing a charm offensive. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has reported that the club planned talks aimed at changing Gabriel’s mind, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally involved in the effort to keep him.
The teenager, it seems, has his own ideas.
Barcelona move gathers pace
On Friday afternoon, the story took a sharp turn. Manchester Evening News Chief Manchester United Correspondent Tyrone Marshall revealed that Gabriel was in Barcelona for talks over a move to the Nou Camp.
“JJ Gabriel in Barcelona today for talks over a move to the Nou Camp,” Marshall posted on X at 3:19pm on September 18. “United will reject his request to be de-registered but threat of a move on October 6, which would require FIFA approval, remains #mufc.”
Less than half an hour later, Marshall doubled down, writing that Gabriel was “closer to Manchester United exit despite club rejecting his request to be de-registered,” confirming the player was “in Spain and holding talks with Barcelona today.” He also noted Spanish reports suggesting Gabriel will receive the EU passport he needs next week.
That detail is crucial. Gabriel holds an Irish passport, a factor that already makes a move abroad more straightforward. Once he turns 16 on October 6, Bailey has reported that he will be eligible to explore a move to an EU club such as Real Madrid or Barcelona, even as the contractual situation in England remains tangled.
The pressure is now squarely on United’s legal and recruitment departments. The clock is ticking towards that October date.
Real Madrid lurking as Barcelona lead race
This is not a one-club chase. Bailey reported earlier on Friday that both Real Madrid and Barcelona have held positive talks with Gabriel’s camp and are viewed as leading contenders should he leave England.
Spanish outlet Marca, which leans towards Real Madrid, has also stated that Gabriel is currently in Barcelona, while journalist Ben Jacobs backed up that line, posting on X at 3:23pm: “JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona for talks. Barcelona and Real Madrid viewed as the most viable contenders if Gabriel goes abroad.”
So while Barcelona are hosting the teenager today, the Bernabeu is very much in the background, watching and waiting.
United, for now, are refusing to blink. They will reject his request to be de-registered and can contest any attempt to move on October 6, a transfer that would need FIFA approval.
Gabriel, on the other hand, has made his intentions abundantly clear. He has told United he wants out, he has formally pushed for his registration to be cancelled, and now he has flown to Barcelona to sit down with the Spanish champions.
