Joao Cancelo’s Return to Barcelona Delayed
Barcelona’s week of anticipation has taken an unexpected twist, with Joao Cancelo’s return to the club held up just as the city was bracing for a double unveiling.
The Catalan giants are closing in on two headline arrivals in Cancelo and Rodri, a pair of signings designed to sharpen both flanks of the team. Most of the spotlight has been on Rodri, who is expected to be presented to the fans during the Joan Gamper trophy clash against Al Ahly. Quietly, though, Cancelo has already slipped back into Barcelona.
He is in the city. He has signed. He is desperate to pull on the shirt again. Yet the deal is still not official.
Cancelo’s announcement on hold
According to Victor Navarro, Barcelona do not plan to announce Cancelo’s signing immediately. The formal confirmation could be pushed back by two to three days, stretching the patience of supporters who have followed this saga all summer.
No clear explanation has emerged for the delay. Cancelo has completed his part of the move and has already arrived in Barcelona, but the final touches between the club and Al Hilal appear to be taking longer than expected. At the same time, much of the club’s energy is locked in on staging a grand reveal for Rodri at the Joan Gamper trophy, a traditional curtain-raiser that doubles as a showcase for new stars.
What is clear is Cancelo’s determination. The Portuguese international has gone to remarkable lengths to force this move through, including giving up the salary owed to him for the remainder of his contract at Al Hilal. For a player of his stature, that is a significant sacrifice and a clear statement: he wants Barcelona, and he wants it now.
The former Juventus full-back has pushed from start to finish. His intent has been obvious throughout Barcelona’s pursuit, his camp working relentlessly to engineer a return to a club where he believes he still has unfinished business.
No Gamper cameo for Cancelo or Rodri
The delayed announcement comes with a sporting cost. Without the official green light, Barcelona cannot field Cancelo in the Joan Gamper trophy match against Al Ahly, denying fans a first glimpse of him back in blaugrana in a festive setting designed for exactly that kind of moment.
Rodri, too, is unlikely to feature. The plan is for the Spanish international to be unveiled during the event, but not to take part in the game itself. The night will belong to the presentation rather than the pitch.
The real impact of both signings should be felt when the league campaign begins. Cancelo and Rodri are expected to be available for Barcelona’s season opener against Elche on August 23, when the talking stops and selection decisions start to bite.
That is where the intrigue sharpens. If Cancelo’s registration is completed in time, does he walk straight into the starting XI? Alejandro Balde’s pre-season form has raised questions, his performances falling short of expectations at a time when competition is arriving on his flank.
Cancelo has done everything in his power to get back to Barcelona. The club have done the hard work to bring him to the door. Now the only question is how quickly they turn the key – and how dramatically that changes the look of their back line on opening night.
