Jose Mourinho's Ambitious Plans for Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho is not a man who deals in “enough”.
Four new arrivals are already locked in for Real Madrid, the summer market barely out of first gear, yet the head coach is pushing hard for more. The message to the Bernabeu hierarchy is blunt: this rebuild is only halfway done.
Four in the door – and still not satisfied
Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva have all agreed to join Madrid, their signatures secured before the dust has even settled on the 2026 World Cup. They will walk into a dressing room already bristling with stars, but Mourinho wants them to be part of something bigger, deeper, harder to beat.
By the time that quartet actually sets foot on the Santiago Bernabeu pitch later in the summer, he expects to have at least one, and ideally two, more pieces in place.
Not a request. A demand.
Mourinho’s shopping list: a pillar and a playmaker
According to Marca, Mourinho has gone to the club with a clear, two-man blueprint: another centre-back to stand alongside Konate, and a midfielder in the mould of Luka Modric, someone who can dictate tempo and bend games to his will.
He has not left the recruitment department guessing.
In defence, he has named Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck as his preferred options. Two left-footed centre-backs comfortable on the ball, both used to playing under pressure, both capable of anchoring a high line. Schlotterbeck has dominated recent headlines, his name repeatedly linked with a Bernabeu move, yet a recent injury ruling him out for six to eight weeks has thrown a shadow over that possibility. The timing could hardly be worse for the German.
Bastoni, by contrast, sits in the background of the rumour mill, but firmly in Mourinho’s thoughts.
In midfield, the profile is even more specific. The Portuguese coach wants a Modric-esque conductor, a player who can link phases, control rhythm and still pierce lines with the ball. Enzo Fernandez and Mateus Fernandes are the two names on his list. Both bring technical quality and range, but there is a sense inside the club that Fernandez, currently at Chelsea, is the leading candidate.
That does not mean a deal is close. A move for Fernandez is not described as imminent, and the financial and negotiating hurdles involved with prising him away from the Premier League are obvious. For now, he is an objective rather than a certainty.
Mourinho’s imprint on the rebuild
What is already clear is Mourinho’s influence on the entire operation. Konate, Dumfries, Cucurella and Silva did not arrive by accident. The coach has driven those signings, shaping a squad that looks more aggressive, more athletic, and more tactically flexible than the one he inherited.
He intends to do the same with the next wave.
The request for another centre-back underlines his obsession with defensive security and depth over a long, punishing season. The push for a Modric-type midfielder reveals the other side of his plan: control, guile, and a brain at the heart of the pitch to complement the power being assembled around it.
A restless summer ahead
For Real Madrid, the coming weeks will test both their resolve and their resources. The club has already moved quickly and decisively, yet Mourinho is keeping his foot on the accelerator, unwilling to let early business breed complacency.
The squad is stronger than it was at the end of last season. That much is undeniable.
But in Mourinho’s mind, the true measure is harsher: will it be strong enough to dominate Europe again?
