For weeks, his future at Atlético Madrid has been the story that will not go away. The Argentine made his intentions clear during the World Cup, openly admitting he wanted a fresh start and to chase what he called his “dream”. Since then, the noise has only grown louder.

Journalist Jota Jordi, speaking to Sport, has underlined that these days could decide everything.
“Today is the scheduled date for Julian to join the preparation camp for the new season. He will attend with the same professionalism he has always shown with the club,” Jordi said, stressing that the striker is not about to go on strike or manufacture a crisis.
Behind the scenes, though, tension has been building.
According to Jordi, Álvarez requested a face-to-face meeting with Gil Marín ten days ago to clarify his situation. The response from the chief executive was blunt: there would be no early summit, only a fixed appointment.
“There is nothing to talk about, we will meet on the tenth of the month,” was the firm reply reported by Jordi.
So the date is set. The player has turned up, trained, and done his part. Now, as Jordi puts it, the ball sits squarely in Gil Marín’s court.
A dream, a promise, and a dilemma
Álvarez is not pushing this with anger. That is a key point in Jordi’s account.
He describes the forward as “a good man” who “has no problems, does not want any bad atmosphere and is grateful to the club”. This is not a dressing-room rebellion. It is a player asking a club to honour what he believes was promised.
Jordi speaks of an “alleged promise” made last February, a commitment he says came from both Gil Marín and Simeone.
“He has only one dream, promised to him by both Gil Marín and Simeone in February, and he wants to fulfil it. He has the manager’s promise and understands that through dialogue, with courtesy and respect, matters will be resolved,” Jordi explained.
That word – promise – changes the tone of the story. It is no longer just about a transfer fee or a contract. It becomes a question of trust, of how a club deals with one of its key players when ambition and loyalty collide.
Simeone’s own words return to the spotlight
Simeone’s stance on unhappy players is well known. Jordi is quick to remind everyone of it.
The Atlético coach has repeatedly said he does not want footballers who would rather be somewhere else. He has built his era on commitment, on players who run for the badge as much as for themselves.
“It would not be in the club’s interest to keep, not only Julian, but any player who cannot give his best because he is unhappy there. Logic and people must be the priority,” Jordi noted, echoing Simeone’s long-held view.
That principle now faces its sternest test. If Álvarez’s dream lies in Barcelona, and if he believes he was given a green light months ago, how long can Atlético hold the line that he is simply “not for sale”?
