Juventus Goalkeeping Duel: Vicario vs Grabara
Juventus reset their goalkeeping department this summer, and did it with a bold swing.
Out went Michele Di Gregorio and long-serving deputy Mattia Perin. In came two loanees: Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham and Kamil Grabara from Wolfsburg. Both had been tracked for months. Both arrived with the clear message from the club: the shirt is up for grabs.
This is not a classic No.1 and No.2 hierarchy. Not anymore.
A new duel in Turin
Vicario has the gloves for now. The Tottenham loanee has started well, settling quickly and giving Juventus a sense that the position is finally stabilising after recent uncertainty.
But he knows exactly what is behind him.
Grabara did not come to Italy to watch from the bench. Juventus see him as a serious option, not just an emergency backup, and the internal expectation is that he will push hard for minutes across the season.
That pressure is very real. And it is deliberate.
Luciano Spalletti showed last season he is perfectly willing to rotate goalkeepers and drop big names if standards slip. No one is untouchable, not even the man in goal. If Vicario’s level drops, Grabara is close enough to feel it – and close enough to take advantage.
For now, Vicario’s form keeps him in command of the role. He has done what any new No.1 must do: cut out the noise, make the saves, avoid the errors. As long as that continues, he is likely to stay in the side.
But Grabara is not going away. Every training session is an audition, every minor dip from Vicario an opening.
Spalletti’s leverage
For Juventus, this is exactly the tension they wanted.
Two goalkeepers, both on loan, both aware that nothing is guaranteed. It gives Spalletti leverage. He can demand high standards, game after game, knowing there is a genuine alternative on the bench.
It also gives him tactical freedom. He can pick the profile he prefers for specific opponents, the temperament he trusts for certain atmospheres, without being accused of making a symbolic “demotion” of a fixed No.1.
The message is simple: the shirt belongs to whoever is best right now.
Vicario on Grabara: “Healthy competition”
Vicario himself has embraced the fight.
Speaking about Grabara, he chose respect over rivalry, underlining the quality of the man trying to take his place.
“We all know each other more or less, I remember his great season in the Champions League with Copenhagen. He's a strong, quality goalkeeper. There's healthy competition between us, as it should be,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.
No barbs. No mind games. Just an acknowledgment that the man across the dressing room is good enough to play.
Vicario wants to remain Spalletti’s preferred option. Grabara wants to dislodge him. Juventus want both at full stretch.
As the season wears on, the question is not whether this duel will shape their year. It’s how long Vicario can keep Grabara at arm’s length before Spalletti decides to test the depth of his new double act.
