Karim Coulibaly Joins Strasbourg from Werder Bremen
Karim Coulibaly’s rapid Bremen story is over after just two years. The 20-year-old central defender has left Werder Bremen to join French side Strasbourg, completing a move that underlines both his rise and the club’s strategy.
Coulibaly arrived in the summer of 2024 from local rivals Hamburg, initially joining Werder’s U19s. It did not stay a youth project for long. By the 2025/26 season he had forced his way into the first team and stayed there, making 27 Bundesliga appearances and establishing himself as one of the most eye-catching young defenders in Germany.
For Bremen, his departure is both a sporting blow and a financial statement.
“Karim is a prime example of the path we have chosen: signing young, promising players and creating value with them,” said managing director of football Clemens Fritz. “He has made exemplary use of his opportunity with us and developed into a regular starter in the Bundesliga. Even though his departure is a difficult one for us from a sporting perspective, we are fulfilling our financial responsibility by making him such a lucrative offer.”
The message is clear: Werder are sticking to their model. Identify talent, develop it, sell at the right moment. Coulibaly is the latest proof that the conveyor belt works, even if this one hurts.
For the player, the move closes a formative chapter.
“When I joined Werder two years ago, the management outlined a clear path for me, which has been fulfilled 100 percent,” Coulibaly said. “Therefore, I would like to thank my teammates, my coaches, the entire staff, the club, my friends, my family, and of course the fans for their support and trust, for every wonderful moment, but also for every difficult situation from which I was able to learn. Werder Bremen will always remain a special part of my story and my life.”
A Germany youth international who arrived as a prospect and left as a Bundesliga regular, Coulibaly now takes the next step in France. Bremen, meanwhile, must prove once again that their pathway can produce not just one Coulibaly, but the next one waiting in line.
