Keith Andrews Faces Former Player John Egan in Tactical Showdown
Keith Andrews heads back into familiar territory this weekend – and not just because Brentford are on the road at Hull.
On Sunday, the Bees boss will stand in the opposite technical area to a defender he knows as well as almost any player he has coached. John Egan is no ordinary opponent for Andrews; he is a long-time lieutenant, a former pupil and, clearly, a man he still holds in the highest regard.
Andrews worked closely with Egan during his time on the Republic of Ireland coaching staff and later at Sheffield United, long before he took the reins at Gtech Stadium in 2025. Those years left a mark.
"He's someone that I really like as a man," Andrews said in his pre-match press conference, his respect obvious. "I coached him at international level and I also coached him at Sheffield United, so I know John pretty well."
Their paths cross again with the stakes raised. Egan, who enjoyed a successful two-year spell with Brentford under Thomas Frank, is now one of the pillars of a Hull side riding the momentum of promotion. After helping the Tigers back into the top flight last season, the centre-back is preparing to face both his former club and a coach who helped shape his career.
Andrews could hardly hide his satisfaction at how that journey has unfolded.
"I'm so happy for him that he's made that move to Hull, got the promotion back, playing at the highest level and still playing a really important role for our country," he said. "He's a player you would go into the trenches with. He's been a magnificent player. He's a man that I really admire and like."
This is no nostalgic reunion for Egan either. His history with Brentford runs deep. Signed from Gillingham in 2016, he went on to make 71 Championship appearances for the Bees, establishing himself as a rugged, reliable presence at the heart of their defence.
Now he stands as the obstacle, not the foundation.
For Andrews, Sunday brings a tactical challenge wrapped inside a personal one: find a way past a defender he helped mould, a leader he openly trusts, a competitor he would once have chosen first when the going got tough.
