Kimi Antonelli Surprises with US GP Victory, Extending F1 Championship Lead

The outlook for Mercedes looked bleak after Friday's practice at the Circuit of the Americas. Telemetry data showed the Brackley team struggling badly: the car lacked pace, drivers complained about handling, and recent aerodynamic upgrades seemed to backfire.

Yet by Sunday afternoon, 19-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli was celebrating atop the podium, extending his lead in the world championship with an unexpected triumph.

Mercedes Engineering Director Reflects on the Turnaround

Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes' trackside engineering director, described the shift from Friday’s poor performance to Sunday’s dominant win as almost miraculous. He admitted the team was lost initially, but praised the effort that led to the victory.

"Well done to Kimi and everyone in Brackley and Brixworth on the win. After Friday, a race victory simply didn’t look achievable given our single-lap and long-run pace, so it’s been a remarkable turnaround and a very satisfying result," Shovlin said.

Upgrades Prove Challenging Despite Promising Signs

The difficulties stemmed partly from the upgrade package introduced in Malaysia, which turned the W17 into a tricky car to set up. Post-race comments from teammate George Russell calling the car "rubbish" aligned with Shovlin’s observations that the car's setup window narrowed significantly.

"There were encouraging signs with the car pace, although since the update it does feel like the setup window has become a little harder to hit," Shovlin confessed.

Contrasting Races for Mercedes Drivers

The tight setup window led to two very different afternoons for the Mercedes pair. While Antonelli managed his tyres effectively to stay ahead, Russell faced a tough race after an early track limits penalty and getting stuck behind Oscar Piastri’s McLaren.

  • Russell's Challenges: Penalty for off-track excursion on lap 1 hindered progress.
  • Stuck Behind: Unable to pass Piastri despite a strong second stint start.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes pit wall remained composed under pressure, trusting their strategy despite rising tyre wear on the rough Texas surface.

"Operationally, the team did a very good job. The strategy decisions weren’t clear-cut, but we held our nerve, made the right call to stick with the one-stop, and the pitstops were solid," Shovlin explained.

Credit to Antonelli for Exceptional Performance

Ultimately, Shovlin reserved most praise for Antonelli’s driving, which turned a difficult car into a winning machine at a crucial point in the season.

"Most of all, Kimi should be incredibly pleased with his performances. It was a difficult Friday, but what he produced in qualifying and the race today was exceptional."
