Sergio Perez Extends Cadillac F1 Contract Through 2029
Sergio Perez has agreed to stay with Cadillac’s Formula 1 team for several more years, signing a deal that runs through the 2029 season. This announcement comes ahead of the Mexican driver’s home race in Mexico City.
After leaving Red Bull and sitting out last season, Perez joined Cadillac for their inaugural 2026 campaign. Despite some ups and downs in this debut year, the 36-year-old has shown strong form, often outperforming his experienced teammate, Valtteri Bottas.
Strong Ties and Future Plans
Since joining, Perez has been deeply involved with the team, building a close working relationship with Cadillac F1 CEO Dan Towriss and General Motors Chief Mark Reuss. The team’s vision convinced him to extend his contract for at least three more seasons.
"Joining Cadillac Formula 1 Team from day one was a project I truly believed in, and extending my commitment feels like a natural continuation of this chapter," Perez said. "Building a Formula 1 team from the ground up takes time, relentless work and patience, but the progress we are making together is incredibly rewarding. There is still a lot of work ahead of us and I am fully committed for the next three years."
He added his thanks to everyone involved with the project across the US and UK, promising fans and teammates he won’t let them down.
Dan Towriss commented: "Building a competitive team in F1 is a long-term journey, and securing Checo’s talent and leadership gives us the continuity and commitment we need to build on the strong foundation established in our first year. Together, we are focused on the next phase of our journey, pushing the team forward and making progress up the grid."
Looking Ahead to Mexico and Beyond
Perez will soon reach a milestone with his 300th Grand Prix start during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. To celebrate, he plans a special show run on the streets of Mexico City. He currently holds six Grand Prix wins, achieved with Racing Point and Red Bull.
The question of who will join Perez as his teammate in 2027 remains open. Although Bottas signed what was thought to be a multi-year deal, his inconsistent results and the team’s ongoing car development challenges have led Cadillac to reconsider its options.
The team has invested heavily in preparing American test driver Colton Herta for a potential F1 debut. While Bottas might keep his seat for another year, numerous outside contenders have also expressed interest in the open spot for 2027.
