Kompany Confirms Cause of Musiala's Collapses

Jamal Musiala’s recent on‑pitch collapses have been traced to a change in his medication, Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has confirmed.

The 23‑year‑old midfielder revealed earlier this week that he is being treated for what he called a “neurological dysfunction”, which leads to “temporary, brief, but easily treatable” seizures. Bayern say they first detected signs of the condition before the World Cup and were fully aware of it before last season, but had not previously seen it affect him during matches.

That changed in pre-season. Musiala went down twice in four days, against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim, alarming team-mates and supporters.

Speaking before Saturday’s German Supercup clash with Borussia Dortmund, Kompany explained what had happened – with the player’s blessing.

“I spoke with Jamal, he said, ‘no problem, you can say it’,” Kompany told reporters. “He made a slight change to his treatment, which caused some side effects. It’s perfectly normal to make changes to a treatment plan.”

The first shock, Kompany stressed, is long behind the club.

“The initial shock for us was a long time ago. Therefore, we’re not talking about it that much at the moment. We’ve received much more information since then and made decisions with the help of leading experts. Jamal has everyone’s support.”

Inside Bayern, Musiala’s condition is no longer a taboo subject. It is part of the daily reality of managing one of their most important players.

Sporting director Max Eberl underlined that the club had been in the loop throughout last season and that Musiala himself wanted the situation to be made public.

“We’ve known about it the entire last season. The players also knew about it. For us, it’s become part of everyday life,” Eberl said. “We will give him all our support, have already done so, and will continue to do so. We’re doing this together.”

For now, Bayern must plan without him. Kompany has ruled Musiala out of the Supercup opener, along with Lennard Maloney and Serge Gnabry, and is looking to restore a sense of normality around his young star.

He spoke of wanting to “get things back to how they were before” and confirmed that Musiala will train “individually” for the rest of the week as Bayern prepare to begin their Bundesliga title defence against Stuttgart.

The champions know they can live without Musiala for a few days. The real question is how quickly they can get him back to being the fearless, free‑running heartbeat of their midfield when the league campaign starts to bite.
