Lamine Camara is fast becoming the midfielder nobody in the Premier League can ignore.
Manchester United, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest are all locked into a fight for the Monaco star, with French outlet Foot Mercato describing the chase as “fierce”. Monaco, for their part, know exactly what they have on their hands – and they are pricing him accordingly.
A rising force in Ligue 1
Camara, 22, arrived at Monaco from FC Metz in July 2024 for €15m. It already looks a bargain. Since that move he has racked up 71 appearances, driving himself into the heart of one of Ligue 1’s most watchable sides and emerging as one of the division’s standout young midfielders.
He is not a specialist. He is a storm.
An all-action, box-to-box presence, the Senegal international blends aggressive tackling with the ability to glide past opponents and create in the final third. That mix of bite and imagination is exactly what top clubs pay a premium for.
On the international stage, he has already carried a heavy load. Camara started all four of Senegal’s matches at the World Cup, only to see their run cut short in the round of 32 by Belgium. That tournament underlined his capacity to handle pressure and responsibility. It also put more scouts on alert.
Back at Monaco, he has wasted no time reminding everyone of his ceiling. On Sunday he helped the Principality side edge Liverpool 3-2 in a pre-season friendly, a timely performance with two of England’s biggest clubs circling.
Premier League scramble
The interest is broad, but the stakes are different.
United and Liverpool are “in the hunt”, having already expressed interest earlier this year and continuing to monitor Camara’s situation closely. Both see him as a solution to long-running midfield questions, a player who could grow into a central role over the next cycle.
They are not alone, and that is the problem.
Crystal Palace have already made their move, lodging what is described as a concrete offer. Nottingham Forest are expected to follow, with an official bid anticipated in the coming days. Those two clubs are trying to steal a march on the traditional heavyweights by acting faster, not louder.
Money will decide plenty. Foot Mercato report that Monaco want around €50m (£43m) for their midfield gem. Other reports from France go further, suggesting the Ligue 1 side are holding out for €60m (£51m) and have already turned down a €50m proposal from Palace. Monaco know the Premier League market. They are behaving accordingly.
United’s rebuild and a missing piece
For Manchester United, the chase for Camara comes against the backdrop of a broader midfield rebuild. They have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer. A third addition is planned to complete the reshaping of the engine room.
Several targets have slipped away. United look set to miss out on Alex Scott and Aurelien Tchouameni, two names long admired at Old Trafford. That has pushed them to widen the net, with Sander Berge, Tyler Adams and Carlos Baleba also on the radar.
Camara is not yet a superstar name. That may work in his suitors’ favour. He represents a different profile: a relatively under-the-radar talent with top-class potential, the kind of signing that can look transformative two years down the line if handled correctly.
The question is whether United are prepared to go to Monaco’s asking price when other needs still press around the squad.
Liverpool’s midfield equation
Across the North-West, Liverpool’s need is just as clear, but framed slightly differently.
They require a midfielder who can inject energy and quality into a unit that laboured at times last season. Camara ticks both boxes. His intensity without the ball and his ability to break lines with it would mesh neatly with Liverpool’s high-tempo demands.
There is also a potential domino effect. Inter Milan are targeting Curtis Jones, and Camara could be the man to replace him at Anfield if that move materialises. His arrival would not just plug a gap; it could also help unlock Alexis Mac Allister, who struggled to consistently impose himself last term.
A more dynamic partner behind and beside Mac Allister could free the Argentine to operate in his most damaging zones. Camara’s range and work-rate offer exactly that sort of platform.
Monaco hold the cards
For now, Monaco sit in the strongest position. They have a 22-year-old midfielder with World Cup experience, proven over 70-plus games in a major European league, and a queue forming outside the door.
Palace have tested their resolve. Forest are readying their own attempt. United and Liverpool hover, aware that hesitating too long can see a target vanish into someone else’s dressing room.
