Lewis Koumas: A Step Forward Despite Liverpool Loss
At Anfield on Sunday, the scoreline said defeat. For Lewis Koumas, the afternoon felt like a step forward.
The 20-year-old Wales international was trusted with a start in Liverpool’s 3-2 pre-season loss to AS Monaco and stayed on the pitch for 75 minutes, a sizeable show of faith at a stage of summer when opportunities can define a season.
Koumas spent the second half of last term on loan at Hull City, learning the grind of regular senior football. Now back on Merseyside, he is immersed in daily sessions with Liverpool’s first-team core and can feel the difference.
"It's always good and obviously I train with them every day, so it's always good to try to take bits of their game and put it into mine," he told Liverpoolfc.com, a line that underlined a young player intent on absorbing everything around him rather than simply surviving in it.
The physical side is starting to catch up with his ambition. "It's the best I've ever felt physically, so I've just got to keep training," he said, a simple verdict but an important one for a forward trying to convince he can handle the pace and press demanded at Anfield.
That demand is being sharpened by Andoni Iraola. The new head coach has made his expectations clear: intensity, front-foot work, and a willingness to embrace his aggressive style without fear.
"He [Iraola] is just encouraging me to just play my game, press, work hard and continue to try to adapt to how he wants us to play," Koumas explained. The message is direct. So is the task.
Back on home turf, the surroundings felt familiar, the stakes anything but. A pre-season friendly in name, a live audition in reality.
"It was really good to be back at Anfield with the fans. I thought they were great," he said. The crowd responded to his movement, his willingness to keep asking for the ball, his persistence in the final third.
The chances came, just not the finish. Koumas didn’t hide from that either: "A few chances [for me]. I just [need to] keep getting in the area and they'll come hopefully."
The result will fade from memory. Those 75 minutes, and what Koumas does with them, will not.
