Lionel Messi Poised to Acquire Spanish Club CD Eldense, Expanding Football Ventures

Lionel Messi, currently a star at Inter Miami, has agreed in principle to take over CD Eldense, a club competing in Spain's Segunda Division. This deal will give him complete control of the club, marking another step in his growing involvement in Spanish football as he prepares for a possible return to Catalonia.

Details of the Takeover

The agreement reportedly involves Messi acquiring 100% of the club's shares without any third-party investors. The purchase is subject to final approval from Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) and completion of due diligence, expected soon. Previously, the Alicante-based club was owned by an international investment group led by Juan Carlos Trujillo after acquiring it from Pascual Perez in October 2025.

Before Messi's entry, Argentine investor Ricardo Pini had made a €12 million bid, but Messi's offer shifted the negotiations drastically in his favor. Eldense is located near Catalonia, making it a fitting addition to Messi's football interests.

Messi Family’s Growing Football Investments

This acquisition extends the Messi family's reach in football. Earlier this year, they bought Spanish fifth-tier team UE Cornella. Additionally, Messi and close friend Luis Suarez have acquired Uruguayan club Deportivo LSM. His brother Matias also holds a leadership role as president of Lions FC, reflecting the family's expanding involvement in football management.

Current Challenges at Eldense

On the field, Eldense faces difficulties after dismissing head coach Claudio Barragan following just two points earned from four matches. The club urgently needs a new manager to reverse their poor form in the Segunda Division standings. Messi's upcoming role as majority owner is expected to bring financial stability and clearer strategic direction to the club's future.
