Liverpool's Strong Push for Bradley Barcola: Transfer Update
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has moved into its decisive phase, with the fee finally dropping to a level the Anfield hierarchy believe they can work with.
The 23-year-old PSG winger has been Liverpool’s priority wide target all summer, and the club are now expected to launch what has been described as a “very strong” push to get the deal over the line in the final week of the window.
Price drops as Liverpool circle
PSG started the summer by planting a flag in the sand: €170m, or £145m, for Barcola. Liverpool never came close to entertaining that figure.
The landscape has shifted. PSG have since brought in three new forwards – Ferran Torres, Mika Godts and Maghnes Akliouche – and Barcola has slipped further down the pecking order. Both he and fellow Liverpool target Ibrahim Mbaye were left out of the squad for the Ligue 1 opener against Rennes, a clear signal from Paris that they are ready to deal.
As the attacking reinforcements arrived, the price began to move. First, the fee was widely reported to have dropped to around €146m (£125m). On Tuesday morning, insider Graeme Bailey was told PSG had gone lower again, to €140m (£119m).
That figure has been greeted with some relief at Anfield. Liverpool do not want to make Barcola the most expensive signing in British football history and heap that level of expectation on a player still developing. Alexander Isak’s £125m move remains the benchmark, and at PSG’s latest valuation, it would stay that way.
Direct talks, no theatrics
Personal terms between Liverpool and Barcola are already understood to be in place. The real work now is between the boardrooms.
Liverpool and PSG are in daily contact, with discussions focused on the fee and the structure of the deal rather than public bids and counter-bids. This is not a saga played out through formal offers leaked to the media; it is a direct, high-level negotiation between club executives and owners.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano underlined that point when speaking on YouTube, stressing that the €170m figure was never considered realistic inside the industry, but that Barcola would still command a huge outlay.
He described the talks as “alive” and made it clear that Liverpool intend to push hard in the coming days to secure the France international. In his words, his expectation is “absolutely for Liverpool to go very strong for Barcola” as the deadline looms.
The final hurdle is agreement with PSG. Until that arrives, there will be no trademark “Here We Go”.
Two wingers or one?
Barcola is only part of Liverpool’s late-window plan. The club want two new wingers before the deadline.
With Barcola identified as the marquee addition, Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh currently leads the race to be the second wide signing ahead of Mbaye. Liverpool are actively working on that front as well, with the Minteh deal viewed as more advanced than other alternatives.
There is another moving piece. Liverpool’s determination to add a second winger hardens if Cody Gakpo leaves. Tottenham and Manchester City are both monitoring the Dutchman, and any serious move from either club would trigger another push from Liverpool to reinforce out wide.
So the picture is clear. Barcola remains the top target, the price has finally shifted into a range Liverpool can engage with, and talks with PSG are running every day.
Now comes the question that will shape the end of their window: can Liverpool turn this “very strong” intention into a statement signing before the clock runs out?
