Liverpool’s Ndukwe Set for Loan Move as Defensive Depth Dwindles
Liverpool’s summer plans at centre-back took another twist with news that highly rated youngster Ifeanyi Ndukwe will leave the club on loan next week, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The 18-year-old only officially arrived this summer after a deal was agreed back in January to bring him in from Austria Wien. He has wasted no time making an impression. Ndukwe has started all four of Liverpool’s pre-season matches at senior level, thrown straight into the rhythm and physicality of the first team rather than tucked away in academy fixtures.
That level of exposure tells its own story. Liverpool clearly see something serious in the Austria U21 international: composure on the ball, athleticism, a defender comfortable stepping into a modern back line. Pre-season minutes are rarely handed out as charity at this level, and certainly not four consecutive starts.
And yet, for now, Anfield will not be his stage.
Work-permit rules have cut across his momentum. Ndukwe does not have the required number of points to be registered for Premier League action this season, which means he cannot feature for Liverpool’s first team in competitive games. The club’s answer is decisive: a loan move, starting next week, with a pathway already mapped out.
Offers have already arrived from Portugal, with Liverpool now weighing which destination best serves his development. A league that values technical defenders and gives young players real minutes would suit him, and the fact those conversations are happening so early in his Anfield career underlines how the club view him. They would rather test him in senior football abroad than let him coast through academy fixtures on Merseyside.
For Ndukwe, it is a fast-track education. For Liverpool, it is a gamble on potential at a time when the present looks fragile.
Defensive concerns mount
While one centre-back prepares to leave on loan, Liverpool’s senior options are thinning.
Joe Gomez has picked up an injury that will rule him out of the opening Premier League fixture. Ibrahima Konaté has already departed for Real Madrid in the summer window, stripping away another pillar of the back line. Suddenly, what once looked like healthy depth now feels exposed.
The club have moved to refresh the position with youth. Giovanni Leoni has arrived but is still recovering from injury. Jeremy Jacquet is in the building as well, yet he has not played a minute in the Premier League. Both are prospects, not yet solutions.
Virgil van Dijk remains the reference point, the leader around whom everything at the back is built. But the picture beside him is far less settled. With Gomez sidelined, Konaté gone, Leoni unavailable and Ndukwe heading out on loan, Liverpool are edging towards the new season with a defence that looks light on proven, ready-made support.
That reality is likely to drag centre-back recruitment towards the top of the club’s to-do list in the remaining weeks of the window. Youth has been brought in, pathways have been opened, but the profile now needed is clear: experience, reliability, someone who can walk straight into a Premier League back line next to Van Dijk and cope with the demands from day one.
Ndukwe’s story is only just beginning at Liverpool. The club’s decision to send him out early, to test him in senior football rather than hide him in youth ranks, hints at long-term plans and long-term trust. The immediate question, though, hangs over Anfield:
