Liverpool's Transfer Window Crisis: Replacing Salah
Liverpool are staring at a critical week in the transfer window – and the squad still looks worryingly unfinished.
The club know they need reinforcements if they are serious about chasing trophies again, yet the picture remains blurred with just days left before the deadline. Four first-team players have gone. Only three have arrived. None convincingly upgrade what has been lost.
This was supposed to be the summer of sharp change under Andoni Iraola. Instead, it feels like a race against the clock.
Salah’s shadow and a stalled plan
One issue towers above the rest: replacing Mohamed Salah.
That should have been the first item on Liverpool’s to-do list. Richard Hughes has been aware since early July that Yan Diomande would not be the man to fill that void. The failure to move quickly from that point has left supporters wondering why the hunt for Salah’s successor has dragged on so long.
Bradley Barcola is now the standout target. The club see him as the ideal signing, a potential game-changer for the attack. But Paris Saint-Germain’s asking price is sky-high, and that fee is a major reason why the deal is stuck in limbo. Until that stand-off breaks, Liverpool’s forward line remains incomplete.
With Barcola negotiations stalling, the transfer rumour mill has spun into overdrive and a string of alternative names has been thrown into the frame.
Mbaye interest grows – and so does the tension
Ibrahim Mbaye is one of those names. At just 18, and already making a name for himself in Paris, he has quickly attracted attention from across Europe. Liverpool are among the clubs keen, but they are far from alone in the chase.
That competition sparked anxiety among supporters, unsure whether the club could afford to hesitate again. An update from Fabrizio Romano has at least offered some encouragement, with Liverpool fans feeling they might still be firmly in the race for the teenager’s signature.
But encouragement is not the same as a completed deal. Not in the final week of a transfer window.
Gakpo interest complicates the picture
As if that wasn’t enough, there is another threat looming over Liverpool’s attack.
Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are both monitoring Cody Gakpo, hoping to tempt him away from Anfield before the window closes. If either move gathers pace, the entire structure of Liverpool’s frontline could be ripped up in the space of a few days.
On Sunday, Gakpo was Liverpool’s standout attacker. On current form, letting him go now would make little sense, especially with the squad already light in forward options. Losing him without a rock-solid replacement lined up would turn a difficult situation into a full-blown crisis.
Even in a best-case scenario where Mbaye and Barcola both arrive, Liverpool would still be one attacker short. Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with no clear return date, leaving another hole in Iraola’s plans.
A decisive week for Hughes
That reality piles the pressure on Hughes. If he fails to strengthen the forward line before the window shuts, the questions will come thick and fast – from the stands, from pundits, and perhaps from inside the dressing room as well.
And that’s before Gakpo is even sold.
Liverpool have about a week to fix an attack that has lost Salah, leant on Gakpo, and waited too long for clarity. The window will slam shut soon enough.
