Luis de la Fuente Supports Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Gavi Ahead of Spain’s World Cup Quarter-Final
Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente has expressed strong backing for Barcelona talents Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Gavi as Spain prepares to face Belgium in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final.
The comments came shortly after France secured a place in the semi-finals by overcoming Morocco, with Spain aiming to join them in the final four.
Pedri’s Role Underlined
When asked about Pedri's recent form, De la Fuente emphasized the midfielder's consistency and influence on the squad, even if his performances haven't always dazzled.
"Very good. Whether he’s on top form or not, he always sets a very good tone. It probably wasn’t the most spectacular performance, but it was certainly effective. And those who came on benefited from that work. You have to bear in mind that not everyone can be at 100%."
He added that Pedri's reliability helps balance the team when others might not be at their peak, highlighting the collective effort within the squad.
Lamine Yamal’s Potential
On Lamine Yamal, De la Fuente noted the young player's motivation and cautioned against letting it turn into pressure.
"Yes. I think he’s really motivated. That’s why we need to keep him calm, so that doesn’t turn into anxiety. And we know the best Lamine is yet to come because he hasn’t quite reached that moment of brilliance yet."
The coach praised Yamal’s defensive contributions in a recent match and predicted he would soon showcase his full attacking potential.
Gavi’s Ambition Highlighted
The conversation also touched on Gavi, who recently shared a bold goal of scoring a bicycle kick in the World Cup final.
"Well, I’d be delighted because it would mean we’d reached the final, and if Gavi – whom we love so much – were to score it on top of that. That just shows he believes we can get there. Gavi is a fantastic lad and a great footballer,"
De la Fuente’s words reflected admiration for Gavi’s confidence and positive mindset ahead of one of Spain’s biggest matches in the tournament.
