Luka Vuskovic's Impressive Home Debut for Brighton
Luka Vuskovic did not need many words to sum up his first taste of the Amex. “It was very nice,” Brighton’s record signing said – and you sensed he meant every bit of it.
The 17-year-old centre-back, handed a home debut in the friendly against Roma, played the first 45 minutes before making way for club captain Lewis Dunk. It was a gentle introduction in name only: a new league, a new country, a new crowd watching every touch. He looked at ease.
For Vuskovic, one detail mattered above all.
“A clean sheet is the most important thing for me as a defender, but I think we played very good as a team,” he told BBC Radio Sussex, sounding more like a seasoned pro than a teenager still unpacking his bags. Brighton shut Roma out, and the Croatian’s part in that will not have gone unnoticed on the bench.
The young defender has only been on the south coast a matter of weeks, but the settling-in period seems to have been short.
“The last two or three weeks that I've been here have been really nice and I am enjoying my time here. All the guys accepted me really well, so did the coaching staff and the other people at the club.
“I think we are a really good group of young people and we can only grow as players and humans. I think this will be a really good season for us.”
Those are big words from a new arrival, but they fit the project Brighton are building: talent, upside, and a dressing room that leans into youth rather than fears it.
Hurzeler sees a quick learner
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler did not bother hiding his enthusiasm.
“He's very mature for his age so he adapts quickly and understands quickly,” Hurzeler said. “If a player can understand quickly then it shows they have real quality.”
The message was clear. This is not a long-term punt to be hidden away in the background. Brighton expect Vuskovic to matter.
“He will be an important player for us. This is just the first step as there are things that he needs to improve, but he has the right mindset and attitude.”
That mindset comes with a bonus. Vuskovic is not just a stopper; he brings a threat in the opposition box too.
“He is a big threat as he scored a lot of goals at his previous club, so that will help us with set pieces which have been very important for us in the Premier League,” Hurzeler added.
Brighton have long squeezed value from dead-ball situations. Add a tall, aggressive centre-back with a track record of scoring, and the equation becomes even more dangerous.
One pre-season outing at the Amex is only a starting line. Yet between the clean sheet, the calm on the ball and the faith of a demanding head coach, Vuskovic has already offered a glimpse of why Brighton were willing to break their transfer record for him. The real question now is how quickly that “very nice” debut turns into a permanent place in a Premier League back line.
