Macaulay Tait Joins St Johnstone on Two-Year Deal
Macaulay Tait has never been one for the headlines. He’s come to St Johnstone to graft.
The 20-year-old midfielder has completed a permanent move from Hearts to McDiarmid Park on a two-year deal, swapping the comfort of his boyhood club for the promise of regular football and a bigger role in a side on the rise.
“I’m really excited to get started and to meet all of the boys properly,” he said, the relief of a decision made clear. The lure was simple: a club that genuinely wanted him. “How much the club and the gaffer wanted me was a great start to all of this.”
Tait arrives with a solid grounding. He came through the Hearts academy and made 16 first-team appearances, a respectable return for a young midfielder trying to break into a squad with top-six ambitions and European aspirations. For him and his family, those outings in maroon meant something. But he knew it wasn’t enough.
So he stepped out. Two loan spells with Livingston over the past 18 months toughened him up, exposed him to the demands of Premiership football every week, and pushed his game on. He doesn’t hide that debt. “I took the step on loan to Livingston for the past 18 months and I can’t thank them enough for progressing my career,” he said.
Now comes the real leap: ownership, not opportunity. St Johnstone are back in the top flight and talking about momentum, not survival. Tait sees that as the perfect stage.
“I felt it was the right place to continue my journey. The club has momentum coming into the top-flight, and it seems a really positive place to be. The boys play good football and I’ll just be looking to come in and add to that.”
There’s no promise of stardom in his words, no grand declarations. What he offers is industry and edge.
“I’ll be hard-working and run for this team as much as I can,” he said. “Hopefully I can bring quality on the ball and give the attacking players the service to do their stuff. I’m happy to do the dirty work.”
Every dressing room needs one like that. A midfielder willing to cover ground, close spaces, and take the hits so others can shine. St Johnstone believe that player can be Tait. He believes this is where he proves it.
