Mahmoud Saber Ignites Egypt's World Cup Clash with Iran

Mahmoud Saber needed only five minutes to jolt Group G to life in Seattle.

With Egypt already assured of a place in the knockout rounds for just the second time in their World Cup history, the pressure should have sat lighter on their shoulders. It didn’t look that way when Saber burst through and slipped a ruthless finish through the legs of Alireza Beiranvand, the Iran goalkeeper beaten by both the speed and nerve of the strike.

One touch to steady, one to decide. Beiranvand spread himself, but Saber’s low effort threaded the gap and rolled into the net, sending the Egyptian end into early celebration.

This was supposed to be Iran’s chance to exploit any Egyptian relaxation, to lean on a side that had already done the hard work in the group. Instead, they were chasing almost from the first whistle, the game shaped instantly by that moment of incision.

Iran refused to fold.

Nine minutes after falling behind, they hit back. Ramin Rezaeian strode into the spotlight in the 14th minute, leveling the match and snapping Egypt’s early grip on the contest. The equaliser reset everything: 1-1, the noise rising again, the tension restored.

Egypt may not desperately need three points. Iran absolutely do. And with both teams trading blows this early, the night in Seattle promises far more than a dead rubber.
