Mamelodi Sundowns vs Marumo Gallants: Champions Face Tough Challenge

Mamelodi Sundowns will arrive as African champions, unbeaten this season and heavy favourites on paper. Yet there’s a hint of unease around them as they head into another meeting with a Marumo Gallants side that has a habit of making their lives awkward.

Gallants are already staring at another survival scrap. One point from two league games under new head coach Phuti Mohafe, and that solitary point came against newly promoted Kruger United. The pattern feels uncomfortably familiar after last season’s relegation fight.

They at least have a goal to cling to. Thapelo Dhludhlu’s late strike in a 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch finally got them off the mark, a consolation on the night but a small psychological shift for a side that had been blunt in front of goal.

Sundowns strong, but leaking

Sundowns remain undefeated this term, but the sheen isn’t flawless. They have conceded five times in their last three competitive fixtures, a worrying trend for a side that usually strangles games from the back.

Their recent form reads D W W D L, and while that run still speaks to consistency, the goals against column has opened a door that Gallants will hope to force wider.

Miguel Cardoso is wary of what awaits.

“First of all, Marumo had and has players that are very interesting,” the Sundowns coach said. “Second, it's true, the coach in the past made life difficult for Sundowns.”

He knows the scars. Gallants dumped Sundowns out of the Carling Knockout Cup last season on penalties after extra time, a 0-0 grind that ended 7-6 in the shootout. In the league, though, the story has been one-way traffic: Sundowns have never lost to Gallants, winning 10 times and drawing five.

Their most recent league clash, in March 2026, ended 3-1 to Sundowns.

Team news tilts the balance

Injury and selection issues give this fixture a different texture.

For Sundowns, Teboho Mokoena has been managing an injury since the MTN8 quarter-final win over Polokwane City and missed the clash with Kaizer Chiefs. His availability remains a key talking point, given how central he is to their rhythm in midfield.

New signing Siyanda Ndlovu has shaken off a minor niggle and came off the bench against Chiefs. He now pushes hard for a first start, adding fresh energy to the wide areas.

Cassius Mailula is another knocking loudly on the door. Used off the bench in Sundowns’ last two outings, he has responded with vital goals each time. A first start of the season is firmly in his sights.

On the Gallants side, the problems are different. Keanu Cupido and Arthur Sales have yet to feature in a matchday squad this season, with no clear return dates. Monnapule Saleng remains frozen out of the first-team picture because of disciplinary issues, stripping Mohafe of one of his most dangerous attacking options.

Probable line-ups and tactical questions

Sundowns could line up with: Williams; Mudau, Johannes, Kekana, Basadien; Mokoena, Allende, Van Wyk; Ndlovu, Mkhulise; Mailula.

That XI suggests Cardoso may again lean on technical dominance in midfield, with Allende and Van Wyk knitting play together and Mkhulise floating between the lines to feed Mailula. Ndlovu’s inclusion from the start would give them a more direct threat, stretching a Gallants back line that has not looked settled.

Gallants are expected to respond with: Mlambo; Ntiya-Ntiya, Sikakane, Rikhotso, Lukhele; Luthuli, Kunene, Mabuza; Dhludhlu, Ndlondlo, Sihlali.

There is enough experience there to frustrate and spoil, with Ndlondlo’s creativity and Dhludhlu’s recent goal offering a route out of their own half. The question is whether they can keep their shape for 90 minutes against a side that rarely stops probing.

History, pressure and a fragile underdog

Gallants’ league form tells its own story: L D D D D. No wins, just a slow drip of draws that keeps them afloat but never comfortable. Against that backdrop, they would happily bank a point against the champions.

They can draw confidence from that Carling Knockout Cup triumph on penalties last season. They proved then that if they drag Sundowns into a scrap and take the game deep, nerves can creep into even the most polished of sides.

Sundowns, though, carry the weight of expectation. Ten league wins and five draws in this fixture, never a defeat. A squad stacked with talent, even with injuries and niggles. A coach who respects the opponent but understands that anything less than three points will be seen as a stumble.

Gallants will fight for a foothold. Sundowns will push to reassert their defensive authority while keeping their unbeaten run intact.

One club is trying to escape old habits at the bottom. The other is trying to prove that the small cracks in their armour are nothing more than a passing phase.
