Man City Predicted XI vs Coventry: Fernandez Set for Etihad Debut

Manchester City have spent the money. Now Enzo Maresca has to prove it was worth it.

A frantic Deadline Day delivered Enzo Fernandez, Iliman Ndiaye and Ayyoub Bouaddi, and with them a new level of depth – and tension – inside the dressing room. Coventry arrive at the Etihad on Saturday, but the real intrigue lies in how City’s new era actually looks on the pitch.

Fernandez walks straight in

There is no easing Fernandez in. Not at £125m.

The Argentina midfielder, signed for a British record-equalling fee, is expected to go straight into the starting XI and immediately reshape the centre of the pitch. His arrival effectively ends Marc Guehi’s short-lived audition as a holding midfielder. That experiment served a purpose, but with Fernandez available, City can return to something resembling a natural structure.

Elliot Anderson is likely to line up alongside him, tasked with knitting the game together and giving Fernandez the freedom to dictate. It gives City a more orthodox base, and it sharpens the focus further up the pitch.

Because once you lock in Fernandez and Anderson, the squeeze begins.

Creative spots under threat

Rayan Cherki has opened the season brightly. Phil Foden is still the homegrown star who expects to start every big game. Neither can relax now.

With Fernandez anchoring the midfield, the competition for the attacking roles tightens. Maresca wants jeopardy in training and options on the bench. He has them.

Ndiaye, signed for up to £65m, may have to settle for a watching brief at first. The same goes for Bouaddi, a major £86m investment who is still likely to begin among the substitutes. When a club spends at this level, reputations alone do not guarantee minutes. Someone always loses out.

Defence finally taking shape

Behind them, the back line is starting to look like a settled unit rather than a weekly experiment.

Abdukodir Khusanov is set to continue on the right of the defence, with Ruben Dias and Guehi forming the central pairing and Josko Gvardiol on the left. That four offers more continuity than the revolving door of the early weeks, and against a Coventry side that will hunt for any sign of uncertainty, that stability matters.

Dias brings authority, Gvardiol brings aggression, Khusanov offers energy on the flank. For Maresca, the constant reshuffling has to stop somewhere. This feels close to his first-choice back line.

Injury picture and attacking edge

Matheus Nunes is still a doubt as he battles for full fitness. Jeremy Doku remains out with the calf injury he picked up against Arsenal in the Community Shield, stripping City of one of their purest dribbling threats.

Even without Doku, the front line looks imposing. Erling Haaland will again spearhead the attack, with support expected from Semenyo, Cherki and Foden. With Fernandez feeding the lines and Anderson linking play, City should have enough creativity to pin Coventry back and keep them there.
