Manchester United Eye Tottenham's Micky Van de Ven as Key Defensive Target for 2027

Manchester United have made it clear they want to strengthen their defense during the 2027 transfer window. While recent signings have focused on attack and midfield, defensive reinforcements remain a priority for the club's next phase.

In 2025, INEOS boosted their attacking options by signing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko. This summer saw midfield reinforcements with arrivals like Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba. Despite attempts, no defenders joined the squad this summer, but plans are now firm for an overhaul of the back line within the next year.

Contract Situations Drive Defensive Focus

Michael Carrick faces important decisions regarding players whose contracts will soon expire. Luke Shaw's £200,000-a-week deal ends after this season, and Harry Maguire is also set to become a free agent. Meanwhile, Argentina international Lisandro Martinez, earning £120,000 a week, has a contract expiring next summer, though the club holds an option to extend for another year.

Injuries to Matthijs De Ligt have further pushed left-sided defensive options to the top of United's agenda.

Top Target: Tottenham’s Micky Van de Ven

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky Van de Ven has emerged as Manchester United's main target for next summer. The Dutch centre-back signed a long-term contract with Spurs recently despite previous speculation about his departure after two disappointing 17th-place finishes in the Premier League.

Spurs have started the current season poorly, sitting at the bottom of the table, which could lead to renewed transfer talks similar to Cristian Romero's exit last summer.

Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O'Hara praised Van de Ven, calling him "world-class" and saying, "He would walk straight into Man City's team. He would walk into any team."

Versatility Could Make Van de Ven a Valuable Asset

Van de Ven has mostly played as a centre-back in the Premier League but often takes a traditional left-back role for his national team. This flexibility could appeal to Carrick, especially with Shaw's contract ending and Martinez possibly leaving before 2028.

If United can replace two key defenders with one player, it could free up funds for strengthening other areas of the squad while acquiring the player they desire most.
