Manchester City Targets Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea
Manchester City have opened talks with Chelsea over a move for Enzo Fernandez, with the Argentina World Cup winner now sitting at the top of City’s midfield wishlist.
This is not a scouting-department whim. The push is being driven by Enzo Maresca, who worked closely with Fernandez at Stamford Bridge and believes he can reshape City’s midfield around him.
Chelsea’s stance: big fee, tight conditions
Chelsea are ready to let Fernandez go, but only on their terms. The club want their valuation met and a suitable replacement lined up before signing off on any sale.
Earlier in the window, Chelsea set a clear deadline: a written £120 million bid for Fernandez by Friday, August 14 at 5pm. City never submitted that offer, occupied instead with finalising Rodri’s move to Barcelona.
The deadline passed. The story didn’t.
Inside the Etihad, there has long been a belief that Chelsea will still sell before the window closes, regardless of that cut-off. Fernandez is understood to be keen on the switch and on the chance to reunite with Maresca in Manchester.
Chelsea, for their part, are now expected to push for either a higher overall fee than £120 million or a more favourable payment structure than the one discussed before August 14.
Record-breaking territory
Any deal will not be cheap. If the final package for Fernandez climbs beyond the £125 million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer, the 25-year-old would become the most expensive sale in English football history.
That would also place him among the most expensive signings the Premier League has ever seen, underlining just how highly both clubs value him despite a turbulent spell in west London.
A divided Stamford Bridge
Fernandez’s situation at Chelsea has grown increasingly tense. He came off the bench in Monday’s 3-2 win at Fulham, a cameo that again exposed the split in the stands.
Some Chelsea supporters booed him. Others immediately responded by chanting his name. The reasons behind the jeers are not entirely clear: frustration at his desire to leave, lingering resentment over Argentina knocking England out of the 2026 World Cup, or a mix of both.
On the City side, there is far less ambiguity. GIVEMESPORT understands the Premier League champions are confident they can get the deal over the line.
Chelsea’s next move in midfield
Losing Fernandez would force Chelsea back into the market, though the profile they target might not mirror him exactly.
Alex Scott is a player Chelsea admire. Bournemouth, however, expect him to stay. Chelsea had a £64 million bid rejected earlier in the summer and have not returned with an improved offer. There has been no fresh contact between the clubs.
That leaves the door open to a different kind of signing. Under Maresca at Chelsea, Fernandez often played as an advanced No. 8 and even as a No. 10 at times, a shift from the more disciplined No. 6 role he occupied at Benfica in Portugal.
Because of that versatility, Chelsea may decide to lean into creativity rather than like-for-like control. A more attack-minded midfielder or forward is firmly on the table.
Neto, creativity and a reshaped attack
One variable is Pedro Neto. If the winger also leaves, Chelsea could be tempted to invest in a central or right-sided attacking midfielder or forward to rebalance the squad.
Neto is not guaranteed to depart, but Chelsea are open to offers close to £100 million. Should that money come in alongside a Fernandez sale, the club would suddenly be holding two huge levers to reshape the spine and edge of their attack.
For now, all eyes sit on one deal. City pushing. Chelsea holding their line. Fernandez waiting for the call that could turn him into the most expensive export English football has ever seen.
