Manchester City Eye Enzo Fernandez Amid Midfield Turmoil
Manchester City are bracing for a seismic reshuffle in the heart of their team – and Enzo Fernandez has moved near the top of their list.
Club sources have indicated that the Chelsea midfielder is firmly on City’s radar as they prepare for the growing possibility of losing Rodri before the end of the window. New manager Enzo Maresca is understood to be an admirer of his namesake, and Fernandez’s profile fits the technical, front-foot style the Italian wants to impose.
The problem is the price.
Chelsea have previously put a £120million valuation on the Argentina international and, for now, intend to hold that line. Any sale would be reluctant and only triggered by a bid that matches their demands. City, already deep into expensive negotiations elsewhere, are not prepared to go that high for the 25-year-old.
They have already committed around £116m to bring Elliot Anderson into their midfield this summer, a move that has eaten into their budget for another marquee addition. With that outlay on the books, City are said to be “exploring” a deal for Fernandez rather than driving it, wary of being dragged into a second nine-figure transfer in the same window.
Bouaddi first, Fernandez if the dominoes fall
The priority in Manchester remains Ayyoub Bouaddi. City have been working on a deal for the Lille midfielder for several months and still see the Moroccan as their first-choice target as the window heads into its decisive phase.
That pursuit is not straightforward either. A fee in the region of £100m is likely to be required to prise Bouaddi away, a figure that naturally squeezes the room for another major midfield purchase. At those numbers, committing similar money to Fernandez looks improbable.
Yet the market around City is shifting, and with it, their calculations.
Rodri’s future has become a live issue, and he is no longer the only central midfielder whose position is uncertain. Tijjani Reijnders is also being linked with a move away from the Etihad, raising the prospect of City losing not just one, but two established options in the middle of the pitch.
If that happens, the equation changes. Two exits would force City’s recruitment team to think in pairs rather than single solutions. In that scenario, a double swoop for Bouaddi and Fernandez, once considered extravagant, suddenly starts to look like structural repair work.
Reijnders’ patience wears thin
Reijnders’ situation is becoming increasingly delicate. As revealed by Football Insider, the Dutchman could be tempted to push for a move before the 1 September deadline if his role does not look set to expand.
His concern is simple: minutes.
The 28-year-old featured 50 times in all competitions last season, but only 19 of those appearances were Premier League starts. For a player in his prime, that ratio is not enough. If early signals from Maresca do not point to a more prominent place in the pecking order, Reijnders is prepared to consider his options.
Should both he and Rodri depart, City would suddenly find themselves with a gaping hole where their control once lived. At that point, the reluctance to pay Chelsea’s full asking price for Fernandez would be tested against the stark reality of what is left in Maresca’s engine room.
Chelsea, for their part, can afford to be stubborn. They know Fernandez is an asset in a market short on elite central midfielders, and they have no pressing need to sell below their valuation. City, already deep into talks over Bouaddi and fresh from the Anderson deal, must decide how far they are willing to stretch.
The next few weeks will reveal whether Enzo Fernandez becomes the heartbeat of Maresca’s new City, or remains the one that got away in a summer that could redefine the champions’ midfield.
