Manchester United 25-Man Premier League Squad: Mainoo Omission Explained
Manchester United have locked in their 25-man Premier League squad for the 2026-27 season – and one missing name immediately jumped off the page.
The club’s official list, submitted after the summer transfer window closed, complies with the league’s strict rules: no more than 25 senior players, and a maximum of 17 who do not qualify as ‘homegrown’.
To count as homegrown, a player must have been registered with a club in England or Wales for three full seasons before their 21st birthday. United have named eight such players, including Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount, with 15 non-homegrown players filling out Michael Carrick’s senior group.
So far, so routine.
Then came the surprise.
Kobbie Mainoo, one of the brightest midfield talents at Old Trafford, was nowhere to be seen on the senior squad list. This is a player who spent the first half of last season on the fringes under Ruben Amorim, only to be revived and restored to prominence once Carrick took charge. Leaving him out would have been a seismic call.
It isn’t. And it isn’t a snub.
Mainoo’s absence is purely administrative. Born after the start of 2005, he qualifies as an Under-21 player for this campaign. That status means he does not need to be registered in the 25-man squad at all and is automatically eligible to play in the Premier League.
The same rule protects another headline name. Leny Yoro, who turns 21 in November, also sits outside the official 25 but faces no restrictions on his involvement. Both can feature as often as Carrick chooses without occupying a senior slot.

All fall into the Under-21 bracket and are available for first-team selection if called upon. Some are closer than others, but the pathway is clear.
Supporters will keep a particularly close eye on Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, tipped by many around the club as the next to make the leap. Recent recruit Cristian Orozco is another regarded highly inside Carrick’s staff, a name to file away now before it becomes impossible to ignore.
There is also a family thread running through the academy list that underlines the weight of history around Carrington.
