Manchester United Faces AC Milan in Pre-Season Finale

Manchester United’s summer is starting to take shape, and it is not just on the training pitches of Carrington.

Michael Carrick’s side will close their pre-season with a heavyweight friendly against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, on Saturday 15 August, at the Tarczynski Arena. It is the final stop on a tour that stretches across five countries and six cities, a deliberate stress test for a squad being rebuilt for the 2026/27 campaign.

“We’re excited to be concluding our pre‑season tour in Wroclaw, Poland, with a big game against AC Milan,” said technical director Jason Wilcox, who sees the tour as both a tactical tune-up and a branding exercise. These games, he stressed, are designed to sharpen United and reconnect with a European fanbase that has stayed loyal through a turbulent era. “Their support will be vital as we build momentum.”

The subplot? Milan themselves are in the middle of a reset.

Glasner closes in on Milan after Old Trafford links

Once briefly touted as a contender for the United job, Oliver Glasner is now in advanced talks to take charge at AC Milan after confirming his departure from Crystal Palace.

Glasner announced back in January that he would leave Selhurst Park at the end of his contract, and his name was quickly thrown into the Old Trafford conversation. United went another way, handing Carrick the reins on a permanent basis, while Milan moved to sack Massimiliano Allegri after a fifth-place finish in Serie A and failure to reach the Champions League.

Now Glasner looks set to inherit that mess and reshape Milan in his image. If the deal is completed in time, Wroclaw will hand Carrick an early look at a potential Champions League rival and Glasner a clear view of what United are becoming under their former midfielder.

Goalkeeper search: Darlow on the radar

Behind the scenes, United’s recruitment team are moving through a crowded summer agenda. One of the quieter but important items: a new deputy goalkeeper.

Karl Darlow, out of contract at Leeds at the end of the month, has emerged as a serious option. Leeds want to keep the Wales international, but The Athletic report that United are weighing up an approach as they look for an experienced understudy.

Sam Johnstone is also under consideration, according to the same report, while Darlow has interest from Tottenham as well. United’s stance is clear: the priority lies elsewhere on the pitch, yet the need for a reliable No. 2 is firmly on the list.

Midfield overhaul and left-side surgery

The real surgery is coming in midfield. A deal is already agreed to bring Ederson in from Atalanta, a signing that signals a shift in United’s engine room and underlines where the club believe the spine has grown soft.

The left side of the squad is next in line. Recruitment staff are deep into the market for a left-back, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall admired inside Old Trafford. The problem is obvious: Hall has three years left on his contract and Eddie Howe wants to keep him. Newcastle hold the leverage, and United know it.

Defence: numbers strong, trust weaker

On paper, Carrick is well stocked at centre-back. Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven give him five senior options, a blend of experience, pedigree and youthful promise.

In theory, that should be enough. In practice, doubts linger.

De Ligt and Martinez have both endured worrying injury records. United expect De Ligt to return from surgery ready to reclaim his status as a first-choice defender. Martinez, though, faces a pivotal season. He has to prove he can stay on the pitch and anchor a defence that cannot afford another campaign of improvisation.

Inside Old Trafford, there is no current plan to add another centre-back. Some voices on the outside would sell Martinez and bring in a more durable defender capable of playing twice a week without fuss, but that is opinion, not policy. For now, United are backing the five they have and the sizeable wage bill attached to them.

Romero talk shut down

That stance was underlined when links to Tottenham captain Cristian Romero surfaced in Argentina. Reports claimed United were preparing an offer for the centre-back, who has also attracted interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

United sources have dismissed those claims. Romero is not on their summer wishlist, and there is no bid in the works.

Romero has worn the armband for Spurs through two grim Premier League campaigns, both ending in 17th place, with their top-flight status in real jeopardy this season before Roberto De Zerbi dragged them over the line. Even so, United see no value in entering that particular market.

They have already been loosely linked with both of Tottenham’s centre-backs this summer. The reality is stark: the chances of signing either are described as almost non-existent, and, as it stands, there is no plan to recruit in that position.

Mateus Fernandes interest, but not at any price

Midfield, by contrast, remains live.

Manchester United are interested in West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who sits high on their list of potential additions. Talks have taken place over both fee and wages, according to The Athletic.

West Ham, relegated to the Championship, have set their stall out with an £80 million asking price. United have no intention of paying that figure. Inside the market, there is an expectation that the price will soften as the summer drags on, yet Paris Saint-Germain are also in the frame, ready to complicate any drawn-out negotiation.

For United, it becomes a test of patience and principle. Pay over the odds for a key piece, or walk away and trust other targets.

Rashford waits on Barcelona

Hovering over everything is the question of Marcus Rashford.

His future at Old Trafford remains uncertain after Barcelona moved for Anthony Gordon earlier this month, yet the Catalan club still hold a £26 million purchase option on Rashford as part of his loan agreement. They have until June 15 to trigger it.

Reports from Spain suggest Barcelona are hesitating at that price and may try to renegotiate. Bayern Munich have been linked as an alternative destination for the England international, but Marca report that Rashford is not entertaining other moves until Barcelona’s position is absolutely clear.

So United wait. Rashford waits. Barcelona hesitate.

And all the while, Carrick prepares for Milan in Wroclaw, for a season that will not allow many more half-measures or maybes.
