Manchester United's Bid for Bradley Barcola: Liverpool's Pursuit Complicated
Manchester United have been handed an invitation to crash Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola – but the path to the Paris Saint-Germain winger is anything but straightforward.
This is not a simple auction. It is a power play.
Liverpool’s Salah solution – and the Barcola problem
Liverpool’s need is clear. Mohamed Salah is gone after nine prolific years, and Andoni Iraola wants a top-tier winger to anchor his first attack at Anfield. Inside the club, Barcola has moved to the top of the list. He has been tracked for some time, and there is confidence that personal terms would not be an issue if Liverpool can strike a deal with PSG.
That is the theory.
Reality looks far more complicated.
Barcola has grown frustrated with his role in Paris. He has already voiced concerns to Luis Enrique about his dwindling minutes and his slide down the pecking order. Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue now stand in front of him, and Maghnes Akliouche is ready to sign, with talks also ongoing for Yan Diomande, once Liverpool’s main attacking target.
For a 23-year-old who expected to be central to PSG’s future, the message is blunt: wait your turn, or find a new stage.
He wants the latter. He wants out this summer.
PSG light the fuse
French reports say PSG have not started a traditional negotiation with Liverpool. Instead, they have effectively thrown a match into the transfer market.
According to RMC Sport, PSG have informed several elite clubs that Barcola is available and invited them to bid. Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona have all been given the nod.
The suggested starting price from France is €70m (£59.5m, $80m). On the surface, that sounds like a fierce but familiar number in the current market.
The real price of frustration
Inside PSG, Barcola is still rated highly by Luis Enrique and influential advisor Luis Campos. Club sources indicate they have been watching the inflation in English transfer fees this summer and intend to exploit it.
Their stance: if Barcola is to go, it will take around €150m (£127.5m, $171m) for them even to consider a sale.
Publicly, PSG continue to insist he is not for sale. Privately, the situation is far more fluid.
His representatives have been working on his future for weeks, holding conversations with some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Intermediaries have now relayed PSG’s financial demands to those interested, and the outlines of a potential exit are forming.
Barcola’s contract has under two years left to run. If he keeps refusing to sign a new deal, the pressure on PSG will rise. At some point, the club must choose between a huge fee now or a diminishing asset later.
All the while, the player’s stance remains firm: he wants regular first-team football and is ready to leave Paris to get it.
United’s conditional invitation
Into this comes Manchester United.
PSG’s invitation to bid has reached Old Trafford, but United’s position is complicated. Sources close to the club stress that any move for a new left-sided winger hinges entirely on Marcus Rashford’s future.
If Rashford stays, United are not expected to launch a serious push for Barcola. The England forward’s hopes of a permanent move to Barcelona have faded, and United are currently preparing to reintegrate the 28-year-old into their squad.
So United’s interest, for now, is theoretical. The door is open, but only if another closes.
Anfield pull and a tense market
Liverpool, by contrast, are already moving. Barcola is understood to be particularly keen on a switch to Anfield. The project, the role, the stage – it all fits. Club insiders are relaxed about the chase, convinced the squad will be strengthened again before the window shuts.
Reports on Sunday even suggested that Liverpool have already lodged a bid. PSG’s response, by all accounts, was immediate and firm: they will not let him go cheaply, and they are under no obligation to make his exit easy.
There is another layer. Sources indicate PSG are actively looking to offload players to help comply with financial regulations. That need to sell and Barcola’s desire to leave pull in one direction. Their valuation and public stance pull in the other.
Something will have to give.
Iraola’s demands and the summer ahead
Whatever happens with Barcola, the winger is only one piece of Iraola’s rebuild. Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has revealed that Barcola is one of three major signings the new manager should insist on this summer.
He is not the only PSG player on the radar either. Liverpool have been backed to reunite Iraola with another powerful PSG star, with suggestions inside the game that the manager “likes him” and that “a deal makes sense”.
So the battle lines are drawn.
Liverpool see Barcola as a key part of life after Salah. PSG see an asset they can either lock down or cash in for a premium. Manchester United, Arsenal, City, Bayern and Barcelona have all been invited to test their resolve.
The winger wants out. The market is ready. Now it comes down to who blinks first – the club that owns him, or the clubs that believe he is worth tearing up their summer plans for.
