Manchester United Pursues David Raum After Lewis Hall Rejection
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a decisive turn towards RB Leipzig’s David Raum, with the Germany international giving the green light to a move to Old Trafford.
United have made strengthening the left side of their defence a clear priority in the final weeks of the window. Luke Shaw is into the last year of his contract and, after another season disrupted by fitness issues, the club want genuine competition rather than short-term cover.
Lewis Hall was the preferred option. Internally, the Newcastle youngster had been approved as a top target, seen as an ideal long-term fit. But after a summer of high-profile departures at St James’ Park, Newcastle have drawn a firm line: Hall is not for sale. That stance has effectively shut the door on any deal, forcing United to pivot.
The focus has now landed firmly on Raum.
Raum Says Yes
Raum, widely regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s standout left-backs, is also entering the final year of his contract at RB Leipzig. His deal includes a release clause in the region of £34 million, a figure that has already put several clubs on alert.
There is a twist, though. According to TEAMtalk, intermediaries involved in the situation believe Leipzig could be persuaded to do business for under £30m during this window. For a player with his pedigree, age profile and contract status, that price point has pushed him towards the top of United’s shortlist.
Crucially, Raum is on board. The 28-year-old has previously held talks with United and is understood to have signalled his approval for a move, ready to go head-to-head with Shaw for the starting role rather than arriving as a back-up.
United want a left-back who can start in the Champions League, handle the Premier League’s intensity and carry a threat in the final third. Raum’s situation in Germany makes him one of the most accessible options who ticks all three boxes.
With Jason Wilcox effectively conceding defeat in the chase for Hall this summer, the recruitment department is expected to accelerate its push for Raum as the window runs down.

If Raum does land in Manchester, he will not be walking into an unfamiliar building. United’s director of recruitment knows him inside out from their shared time at RB Leipzig.
That prior relationship matters. It explains why Raum has been tracked closely and why there is strong internal conviction about his suitability. Back in 2024, when asked about the defender’s rise, United’s recruitment chief did not hold back in his assessment.
"David has developed brilliantly in the past two years and established himself as a regular for club and country during his first season in the Bundesliga. He's quick, dynamic, can strike the ball and is extremely dangerous from set pieces and crosses."
The numbers behind that praise are equally compelling. Since 2021, Raum has been capped 39 times by Germany, a reflection of his consistency at the highest level and his ability to adapt to different tactical demands. At 28, he would arrive with both experience and the mileage to offer several prime years.
For United, this is no longer a luxury position. With Champions League football secured and Shaw’s contract ticking down, the margin for error at left-back has shrunk. Raum, with a manageable fee, proven pedigree and a clear willingness to join, now looks less like a contingency plan and more like the obvious move.
The question is no longer whether he fits. It’s how quickly United are prepared to move to make him theirs.
