Manchester United Eye Edmond Tapsoba for £43m Transfer

Manchester United face paying around £43million if they want to drag Edmond Tapsoba out of Bayer Leverkusen – and they are not alone in the chase.

The Bundesliga champions are reluctant to lose their captain, but sources in Germany say the door is open if a “suitable financial offer” lands on the table. That figure is understood to be in the region of £43m, a price that has not scared off Manchester United, Newcastle or Tottenham.

Leverkusen leader in demand

Tapsoba has grown into one of Leverkusen’s key pillars. At 27, he is in his prime, comfortable defending large spaces and stepping into midfield to start attacks at pace. Fussballdaten describe him as “tailor-made” for any side wanting to build quickly from the back and dominate big areas of the pitch.

His numbers back that up. Tapsoba made 29 Bundesliga appearances last season and chipped in with five goals – an impressive return for a central defender. Earlier this year he signed a new long-term deal that ties him to Leverkusen until 2031, strengthening the German club’s hand at the negotiating table.

Even so, reports in Germany say his desire for a move has stirred up speculation. Newcastle view him as a ready-made defensive leader. Tottenham have kept a watching brief. All three Premier League clubs are said to be in regular contact with his representatives as they weigh up the demands of any deal.

Developments around his future are expected in the coming weeks. For now, Leverkusen hold firm and wait.

United’s shifting priorities

United’s interest in Tapsoba is not new. They were linked with the Burkina Faso international in 2024, a summer in which they ultimately moved for Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt instead.

This year, the recruitment plan has pointed elsewhere. Michael Carrick and the club hierarchy have concentrated on strengthening left-back and central midfield rather than centre-half. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already walked through the doors at Old Trafford to bolster the middle of the park, yet there remains scope for at least one more addition in that area.

Out wide on the left, United have been pushing to upgrade the flank and the full-back slot. Lewis Hall has been a long-standing target, but Newcastle have made their stance clear: not for sale. Club Brugge have delivered a similar message over Joaquin Seys, shutting down another potential avenue.

The resistance from rival clubs has only sharpened United’s need to be decisive in the final weeks of the window. If they choose to re-ignite their pursuit of a centre-back, Tapsoba’s name sits high on that list – but he will not come cheap.

Carrick wants more

Carrick has not hidden his feelings about the state of the squad. He likes what has been done. He wants more.

“We’ve improved the group,” he said. “We’ve improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.

“So the players that we’ve brought in, I think we’ve done really good business and we’ve got some top, top, top players. So we’re delighted with that. We always want to improve.

“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We’re conscious of that and we’ve got to keep pushing.”

The message is blunt. United will not stop looking.

Whether that search ends with a £43m move for Edmond Tapsoba, or with reinforcements in other areas, will say plenty about how ambitious – and how ruthless – this new Old Trafford project really is.
