Manchester United Focus on Mateus Fernandes as Anderson Deal Falls Through
Manchester United have drawn a hard line in this summer’s midfield rebuild – and Mateus Fernandes now sits right at the centre of it.
INEOS have walked away from a deal for Elliot Anderson after Nottingham Forest slapped a £130million price tag on the midfielder. Inside Old Trafford, that figure landed with a thud. Too high, too messy, too much of a bidding war. United have decided they are not playing that game.
The focus has snapped instead to East London. Or rather, to what remains of West Ham United’s Premier League squad.
From relegation to a transfer race
West Ham’s relegation to the Championship has instantly turned their best assets into targets. At 21, already a Portugal international and with a full Premier League season behind him, Mateus Fernandes has quickly climbed to the top of United’s shortlist.
Tyrone Marshall, Chief Manchester United correspondent for the Manchester Evening News, captured the shift in thinking early on June 11. Posting on X at 7:59am, he wrote:
“Manchester United unwilling to pay £120million for Elliot Anderson and won’t be drawn into a bidding war.
“They want players who want to join them and, as it stands, they are focusing on other targets, with Mateus Fernandes at the top of the list #mufc”
The message was clear: Anderson out, Fernandes in focus.
Romano: “Official contact” and a bid being prepared
From there, the pace quickened. Fabrizio Romano, never far from a major transfer story, has confirmed that United have moved beyond simple admiration.
On his YouTube channel, the Italian journalist revealed that United are now in “official contact” with Fernandes’s representatives and are already “preparing a bid” to send to West Ham. Talks have started on the player side, and the intention is to turn that dialogue into a formal offer.
Romano stressed that United are “for sure in conversations with Mateus Fernandes” and framed the situation as the start of a wider battle. Other clubs are circling. Real Madrid are among them. This is not a quiet, backdoor deal; it is shaping into a full‑blown race.
Earlier this month, Romano also reported that West Ham have fixed a price. In a post on X at 7:04pm on June 8, he stated that the London club set an £85m tag for Fernandes during a meeting with the player’s camp. United are in contact with the player’s side, and “more clubs also attentive and keen.”
A crowded field: Arsenal, PSG, Real Madrid all in
The competition is not hypothetical. TalkSPORT journalist Ben Jacobs has backed up the sense that Fernandes is one of the most active midfield names on the market right now.
Jacobs wrote on X at 3:43pm on June 11:
“Movement expected on Mateus Fernandes’ future this month.
“Manchester United already in talks on the player side.
“PSG and Arsenal also hold appreciation.
“Real Madrid the latest suitor to make contact.
“West Ham want double the £38m+£4m they paid, but despite this valuation as sale is expected.”
West Ham’s stance is bold. They paid £38m plus £4m in add-ons and now want roughly double that outlay. With Romano’s £85m figure on the table, the Hammers know they are sitting on one of the summer’s premium midfield assets.
Yet the expectation, as Jacobs notes, is that he goes. Relegation changes the landscape, even at a club determined to extract every last pound.
United’s midfield puzzle
For Manchester United, the attraction is obvious. Fernandes fits the new profile: young, elite potential, already tested in a major league, with room to grow under a longer-term project.
TEAMtalk reported on May 14 that Fernandes is “extremely keen” on a move to Old Trafford. That matters to INEOS. The new co-owners want players who see United as a destination, not a stepping stone or a financial calculation.
United have already lined up a deal with Atalanta for Ederson Silva, another piece of a reshaped engine room. Dropping Fernandes into that mix would signal a decisive break from the ageing, inconsistent midfield that has dogged recent seasons.
There is also a personal lure. Fernandes is said to fancy playing alongside his Portugal teammate Bruno Fernandes in Manchester. For a young midfielder, the idea of sharing a pitch and a dressing room with the United captain, in front of Old Trafford’s crowd, remains a powerful pull.
An £85m question
The sticking point is obvious and expensive. West Ham’s £85m valuation is heavy, even in a market that has grown numb to big numbers. United have already refused to go near £120–130m for Anderson. How far they are willing to push for Mateus Fernandes will reveal just how much faith they place in this particular profile of signing.
What is not in doubt is the direction of travel. United are in talks with the player’s camp. A bid is being prepared. Arsenal, PSG and Real Madrid are in the frame. West Ham are waiting for someone to blink first.
One thing is clear: if Manchester United truly believe Mateus Fernandes is the midfielder to anchor their next era, this is the kind of fight they will have to win.
