Manchester United Prepare for Leeds Test in Dublin
Manchester United step into Croke Park this evening with the Premier League season looming into view and very little time left to fine‑tune. Leeds provide the opposition in Dublin, but Michael Carrick’s eyes are already drifting towards Hull City on August 22. Two games left, and this one feels like a dress rehearsal.
Carrick is expected to lean heavily on his senior core now. The experimentation phase is almost over; this stage is about rhythm, fitness and combinations that can survive the cut when the real stuff starts.
Defensive Setup
At the back, there is an important return. Senne Lammens has shaken off the illness that ruled him out of the clash with Paris Saint-Germain and is in line for his first start of the summer. In front of him, there could be a reshuffle. Noussair Mazraoui got the nod against PSG, but Diogo Dalot is pushing for more minutes and may come in on the right.
The centre of defence is another live debate. Ayden Heaven struggled on Saturday, and with time running short, Carrick may be tempted to bring Leny Yoro alongside Harry Maguire to stabilise the back line and get a closer look at a partnership that might matter when the season opens.
Midfield Dynamics
In midfield, a new axis has quietly taken shape. Andrey Santos and Mason Mount have knitted together well over pre-season, offering balance and bite. But Mount’s early withdrawal in Gothenburg has thrown a question mark over his involvement here. Both he and Carrick have stressed the change was precautionary, yet there is no need to gamble in August. That could hand Youri Tielemans his first start of the summer next to Santos, a pairing that carries its own intrigue.
Forward Line
Further forward, the captain is back. Bruno Fernandes got his first minutes at the weekend and is expected to start in the No.10 role, taking over from Shea Lacey. That does not close the door on Lacey. Far from it. His performances have pushed him into the first-team conversation, and the expectation is that his role will only grow as the season unfolds.
Out wide, there are stories everywhere. Marcus Rashford has rejoined the group in Dublin, his future still unresolved but his presence impossible to ignore. He has been reintegrated this week, though a starting spot tonight looks unlikely. The same caution applies to Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, both recently back from World Cup duty and still building up.
On the right, Amad has done his part. His display on Saturday strengthened his claim to keep that flank, offering direct running and sharp movement that Carrick will be reluctant to disrupt. The left side is more fluid. Patrick Dorgu has been learning the role and may keep his place as the coaching staff continue to mould him there. Matheus Cunha is another option if, like Lammens, he has fully recovered from his weekend illness.
The centre-forward position remains the big unresolved piece. Carrick would love to unleash Benjamin Sesko, but the striker has not played since the win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last season. Until Sesko is fully ready, Bryan Mbeumo has seized the moment. One of United’s standout performers in pre-season, he has led the line with energy and purpose. Right now, starting him through the middle feels like the obvious call.
Dublin will not decide United’s season. But with Hull fast approaching and only one friendly to follow, the team Carrick sends out against Leeds will tell its own story about who is trusted, who is chasing, and who is running out of time to make their case.
