Manchester United Leads Race for Mateus Fernandes as West Ham Faces Relegation

Manchester United have surged to the front of the pack in the chase for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, muscling ahead of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in a race that could be defined by the final weeks of the season – and by West Ham’s fate.

Fernandes has already lived this story once. He shone in a doomed Southampton side last year, then turned relegation into a £42 million move to West Ham in August 2025. Now the London club are staring at the same trapdoor, and the 21-year-old again looks like the player most likely to escape.

West Ham’s campaign has sagged, but Fernandes has not. Across 41 appearances in all competitions, he has delivered five goals and four assists and, more importantly, shown he belongs at the sharp end of the Premier League. One cap for Portugal hints at his ceiling; his performances in claret and blue shout it.

He plays like a midfielder in fast-forward. He relishes duels, snaps into tackles, then bursts away with the ball at his feet, using tight control to punch through pressure. When he lifts his head, he can slide passes between defenders that turn defence into a counter in a heartbeat. It is exactly the profile United have lacked: energy, aggression, and the ability to carry the ball through the middle of the pitch.

United have already made their move. As reported earlier this week, they have pushed past Arsenal, City and Chelsea with a fresh approach and now “firmly lead the race” for his signature. That stance has been backed up by The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg, who has highlighted a key figure behind United’s confidence: head of scouting Kyle Macaulay.

Macaulay is not just another name on the recruitment flowchart. He knows Fernandes intimately. During a brief spell as West Ham’s recruitment chief, he was the man who brought the Portuguese midfielder to the London Stadium last summer. When Graham Potter was sacked, Macaulay left. He has since resurfaced at Old Trafford, and his presence gives United a powerful card to play in negotiations.

There is another thread tying Fernandes to United. Jason Wilcox, now part of the football structure at Old Trafford, has deep roots at Southampton. Fernandes is an ex-Saints player. Those shared touchpoints matter when a young footballer weighs his next step.

The financial backdrop only adds more tension. Steinberg has pointed out that West Ham’s survival battle will directly shape the deal. If they go down, Fernandes’ price drops. If they stay up, his sale becomes a potential lifeline.

Sources indicate that West Ham would demand around £80 million if they stay in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur’s expense. That figure would place Fernandes among the most expensive midfielders in United’s history. But if the Irons fall through the trapdoor, the asking price is expected to fall “dramatically”, with a fee in the region of £40–50 million viewed as realistic.

At that level, United see a major opportunity. A 21-year-old, already proven in the division, with the physical and technical profile to reshape their midfield. Former Southampton midfielder Jo Tessem has previously described Fernandes as an “ultimate Premier League midfielder”. United’s recruitment team appear to agree.

The landscape around them is shifting quickly. With Elliot Anderson seemingly on his way to Manchester City, United are recalibrating. Their response has been to accelerate plans for Fernandes and Atalanta midfielder Ederson instead.

Talks for Ederson are advanced. There is “confidence” inside Old Trafford that the Brazilian will leave Serie A for the Premier League, with United described as just “one step away” from completing that deal. Land Ederson and Fernandes in the same window and United’s midfield goes from a problem area to a platform.

And the ambition does not stop there. A Newcastle United star has also been linked with a sensational move to Michael Carrick’s side, according to a journalist, underlining the scale of United’s intended rebuild.

For now, though, the spotlight stays on Fernandes. West Ham are fighting for their lives. United are circling, armed with relationships, a clear need, and a plan that puts the young Portuguese at the heart of a new era.

If West Ham fall, does he go down with them? Or does he become the midfielder around whom Old Trafford is rebuilt?
