Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild: Tchouaméni as the Dream Target
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has hit its first major snag of the window. Mateus Fernandes is heading to Tottenham, not Old Trafford, and the immediate question now is how bold United are prepared to be in their response.
Because their “dream” solution wears white in Madrid.
Spurs win the race for Fernandes
United had tracked Fernandes closely all summer, holding talks as they explored a deal with West Ham. The 22-year-old had emerged as one of the Premier League’s standout young central midfielders, shining in a struggling West Ham side with his calm on the ball, progressive passing and ability to glide through pressure.
Clubs across Europe noticed. United were in the conversation. But Tottenham moved with conviction.
Spurs have agreed to meet West Ham’s £85 million valuation with a guaranteed fee, a decisive move that leaves United watching a player they admired walk into a rival’s midfield. For a club intent on reshaping the centre of the pitch after bringing in Ederson from Atalanta, it is a significant blow.
Now the search moves up a level of difficulty.
Tchouaméni: the “dream” target with a nightmare price
One name has never really left United’s internal discussions: Aurelien Tchouaméni.
The Real Madrid midfielder is viewed at Old Trafford as the ideal signing, the type of anchor who could redefine Michael Carrick’s options in front of the back four. Since joining from Monaco in 2022, Tchouaméni has grown into one of Europe’s premier holding midfielders, a regular presence in a Real side fighting on all fronts and a fixture for France at major tournaments.
Nearly 140 appearances for Madrid have showcased exactly why he is so coveted. He screens the defence, snaps into tackles, disrupts attacks and then uses the ball with authority. At 26, he is in that sweet spot: experienced at the very top, but still with years ahead at his peak.
United “love the player”. That much is clear.
The problem? The numbers.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has outlined the scale of the challenge. The financial package required to prise Tchouaméni away from the Bernabéu is currently viewed as too steep. And it is not only about the fee.
“The salary of Aurelien Tchouameni is considered too high,” Romano explained, stressing that both Real Madrid’s demands and the player’s wages sit well beyond what United are comfortable with right now. For any move to become realistic, United would need to negotiate a “completely different salary” with the France international.
That is a huge caveat. Real Madrid, for their part, are under no obvious pressure to sell a key first-team player. They hold the cards. Any deal would have to satisfy both club and player, and at present, neither side has a compelling reason to compromise.
United at a crossroads in midfield planning
Missing out on Fernandes has sharpened the focus. United still want another midfielder to complement Ederson and give Carrick the control and athleticism he craves in the middle of the pitch.
They will keep monitoring the market. They will keep Tchouaméni on their radar. The admiration is real, the fit is obvious, and the potential impact on the squad would be enormous.
A successful move for Tchouaméni would send a jolt through the Premier League: a statement that United can still lure the very best from the European elite. It would give Carrick a defensive midfielder capable of dictating games at the highest level, one already trusted in Champions League knockout ties and on the biggest international stages.
But for now, it remains an aspiration rather than an active breakthrough. The deal sits behind locked doors, guarded by Madrid’s stance and the player’s salary.
United know who they want. The question is whether they are willing — or able — to pay the price to turn a “dream signing” into the cornerstone of their new midfield.
