Manchester United Predicted XI vs Chelsea: Carrick Faces Tough Challenge

Michael Carrick does not just need a result at Stamford Bridge. He needs a way out of a spiral. Eight games without a win, a defence leaking confidence, and a Chelsea side under Xabi Alonso that smells vulnerability — this is the kind of away day that can turn a season, or expose it completely.

Chelsea have hit 26 goals in 11 league matches. They play on the front foot, they swarm the box, and they punish hesitation. United, by contrast, arrive short on form, short on solutions and, crucially, short on defenders.

A Back Line Held Together by Tape

Carrick’s biggest headache is at the back, and everyone knows it.

With no fit left-backs available, Diogo Dalot is almost certain to be shunted across again. He will start on the left not because it suits him, but because there is no one else. It is a compromise that has become a habit.

On the right, Leny Yoro looks set to keep his place ahead of Noussair Mazraoui. On paper, Mazraoui is the natural full-back. On the pitch, Carrick has leaned towards Yoro’s athleticism and recovery pace, a sign of how wary he is of Chelsea’s wide threats.

At centre-back, there is at least one piece of good news. Lisandro Martinez is expected to be fit enough to return alongside Harry Maguire. United have missed Martinez’s aggression and his ability to step into midfield; they will need both if they are to disrupt Chelsea’s rhythm.

Behind them, Senne Lammens should retain his spot in goal. Carrick has made him his first choice and, even in this turbulent run, has resisted the urge to rotate.

So the likely defensive unit reads: Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot. It is a back four that has little time together and even less margin for error.

Fernandes at the Heart of the Gamble

If United are to survive the early onslaught and offer anything of their own, Bruno Fernandes will almost certainly be at the centre of it.

The captain sat out most of the defeat to Bournemouth, his involvement managed carefully after a recent injury concern. The expectation is simple: if he is fit, he starts. There is no alternative with his blend of creativity, work-rate and sheer bloody-mindedness.

Any hint of tension between Fernandes and Carrick appears to have been addressed after the pair reportedly cleared the air earlier in the week. United cannot afford a rift between the head coach and his most influential player, not with the season already fraying at the edges.

The question is not whether Fernandes plays, but where. Carrick’s lack of options up front may again force him to shuffle his captain into a wide role.

An Attack Built on Compromise

Up front, the plan is less a grand design and more a patchwork.

Benjamin Sesko is out until January, stripping United of their primary reference point in attack. Matheus Cunha has drifted down the pecking order, his influence waning just when United need someone to grab games by the collar.

That leaves Bryan Mbeumo as the man trusted to lead the line. Industrious, direct, and willing to run the channels, he offers movement and pressing, if not the penalty-box presence of a classic centre-forward.

Amad Diallo brings volatility. On his day, he can unpick a defence with a moment of invention; on another, he drifts to the margins. Carrick looks set to back his upside again, using him from the right in the hope that this is one of his dangerous days rather than an anonymous one.

If Cunha remains on the bench, the knock-on effect is clear. Fernandes is likely to start from the left, drifting infield to act as a secondary playmaker. That opens space for Youri Tielemans to operate as the number 10, knitting moves together between the lines and trying to find Mbeumo early.

Behind them, the midfield platform matters. Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba have emerged as Carrick’s preferred pairing, offering legs, bite and a willingness to play forward. Kobbie Mainoo could feature in some capacity, but the balance points towards Santos and Baleba starting in a two, tasked with surviving Chelsea’s press and giving Fernandes and Tielemans something to work with.

Predicted Manchester United XI vs Chelsea

Senne Lammens; Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Diogo Dalot; Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba; Amad Diallo, Youri Tielemans, Bruno Fernandes; Bryan Mbeumo.

Unavailable: Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Manuel Ugarte, Benjamin Sesko.

Kick-off is at 12.30pm GMT on Saturday October 31, 2026, at Stamford Bridge.

Carrick walks into West London with a team stitched together by necessity, not design. The question now is whether that makeshift XI can withstand Alonso’s ruthless Chelsea or whether this becomes the afternoon that forces United into even harder answers.
