Manchester United Pursue Manu Kone as Roma Anticipates Bids
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace, and the next move has a clear name attached to it: Manu Kone.
Having already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, United are planning a third addition in the middle of the pitch this summer and have stepped up their interest in the Roma midfielder. The timing is no accident. Kone, 25, had instructed his representatives to park all transfer talks until after the World Cup, and that wait is almost over.
His tournament with France ends with Saturday’s bronze play-off against England, the same stage at which Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford will sign off. Once that game is done, the market around him is expected to move quickly.
United have already approached his entourage, represented by Excellence Sport Nation (ESN), the agency that also looks after Bryan Mbeumo and counts Aurelien Tchouameni, Jules Kounde and Mike Maignan among its clients. The lines of communication are open, and, crucially for United, the player is understood to be willing to sign for them.
Chelsea lurk in the background. They have been credited with an interest and are said to have raised Kone’s name with Roma during separate talks involving Alejandro Garnacho. But at this stage, the London club are a rival rather than a favourite.
In Italy, the expectation is clear. Gazzetta dello Sport report that both United and Chelsea are poised to lodge formal offers in the coming days, with Corriere dello Sport going further and describing United as frontrunners. The sense inside Roma and around the player is that next week could be decisive.
Roma’s position is shaped as much by finance as football. The Serie A club are thought to be holding out for around £47 million, a figure that would bank them a profit of roughly £34m on Kone. For a club under the microscope of UEFA, that number matters.
Earlier this summer, UEFA fined Roma £5m for breaching targets in their settlement agreement and for allowing their squad cost ratio to climb above 70%. A major sale this window would go a long way to easing that pressure and, as reported in Italy, a deal for Kone could effectively draw a line under their dispute.
Head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has not tried to hide the reality. Speaking to Radio Rai 1, he laid out the financial landscape facing the club.
“The financial fair play conditions are never exactly precise or defined, they vary from team to team. It's undeniable that Roma know that we have to balance the budgets, which has been tough in recent years,” he said. “I'd hoped that entry into the Champions League would have been enough, but budgets are important for clubs and must be respected. I think there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”
Clarity, in this case, may well mean Kone leaving.
On the pitch, he has picked the perfect moment to showcase his value. Gasperini described how the midfielder lit up the first half of Roma’s season before an injury interrupted his momentum in the second.
“Kone had a great first half of the season, and then was out of action due to injury for a bit during the second half. He's having a great World Cup,” the coach said. “He didn't play with the France national team last year, but now he's been able to claim a starting spot. It shows his potential and the work he's put in.”
Those performances have not only cemented his place in the France XI, they have sharpened the focus of Europe’s biggest clubs. Kone’s blend of energy, ball-winning and progression from deep is exactly the profile United have been chasing to refresh a midfield that has too often looked short of legs and variety.
There is, however, one complication. Kone’s dream destination is understood to be Paris Saint-Germain. The French champions, and now back-to-back Champions League winners, sit at the top of his personal wish list. At present, though, a move to Paris is not on the table. Without a concrete opening from PSG, the path is clear for United to press their advantage.
Roma know his value. Kone knows his leverage. United know their need.
Once the final whistle blows on France’s World Cup campaign this weekend, the real contest begins – not on the pitch, but across the negotiating table, where United must prove they can turn strong positioning into a signature that could reshape their midfield for years.
