Manchester United Confirm Sancho, Malacia and Casemiro Exits
Manchester United have drawn a firm line under three high‑profile chapters, confirming that Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro will all leave Old Trafford at the end of their contracts.
The announcement came with the club’s retained list on Wednesday, a document that often passes quietly but this time carried the weight of significant change.
Jadon Sancho
Sancho’s costly and complicated United story is over. Signed amid huge expectation for £73million from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, the England winger never truly settled into the role many assumed would be his for a decade. Across three seasons he managed just 83 appearances, his flashes of class too often separated by long, frustrating spells on the periphery.
The last campaign underlined that disconnect. Sancho spent the season away from Old Trafford on loan at Aston Villa, having already returned to Dortmund for a previous temporary spell and also taken in a stint at Chelsea. Now 24 and at a crossroads far earlier than anticipated, he has been linked with a permanent return to Dortmund as well as a longer stay at Villa, where his form and fitness will be scrutinised by suitors and sceptics alike.
Tyrell Malacia
On the opposite flank of the pitch, Malacia’s time in Manchester ends with a sense of what might have been. The Dutch full-back arrived from Feyenoord in 2022 with a reputation for aggression, energy and reliability. He showed all of that in bursts, racking up 50 appearances, but injuries repeatedly broke his rhythm and stalled his progress just as he seemed ready to cement a regular place.
Casemiro
If Sancho and Malacia represent unfulfilled potential at United, Casemiro stands as something different: a proven heavyweight whose stay simply ran its course. The Brazilian midfielder, currently at the World Cup with Brazil, joined from Real Madrid and brought instant authority to United’s midfield. Across four seasons he played 160 games and scored 26 goals, adding a layer of experience and steel that the squad had long lacked.
His departure had already been confirmed earlier in the summer, but its inclusion on the retained list underlined the scale of the transition facing the club. United lose a Champions League-hardened leader from the centre of the pitch, along with a winger once billed as the future and a defender who never quite escaped the treatment room.
In a brief statement, the club said: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell and Jadon for their contributions to Manchester United and wish them the very best of luck for the future.”
Three different careers. Three different stories. All ending at the same time, as United clear space in the dressing room and on the wage bill for whatever comes next.
