Manchester United Targets Chelsea’s Andrey Santos for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s search for a new heartbeat in midfield has taken a decisive turn – and it leads straight through Stamford Bridge.

With Casemiro gone and a sizeable hole at the base of midfield, United have been scouring Europe for a long-term anchor, someone who can shield the defence and still drive the team forward. Michael Carrick has been clear about the profile he wants: not just a destroyer, but a hybrid, a player who can switch from six to eight without breaking stride.

They missed out on one. Now they believe they’ve landed another.

United strike agreement for Santos

According to David Ornstein, United have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Andrey Santos in a deal worth £48 million plus £2 million in easily achievable add-ons, with a 10% sell-on clause included. Chelsea have granted permission for the Brazilian to undergo a medical with United, and personal terms are already in place.

It’s a significant move, not only because of the fee, but because United have beaten what Ornstein describes as “multiple suitors” to the 22-year-old. Chelsea rate him. They just can’t promise him the one thing he wants most: starts.

At Old Trafford, the pathway looks clearer. A midfield in transition, a manager who wants his own profile of player, and a squad still adjusting to life after Casemiro. For Santos, the opportunity is obvious.

Carrick’s blueprint in the middle

Carrick’s summer plan has always involved two midfielders. Ederson was effectively secured early in the window, only for the transfer to stall when United requested a second medical. That caution underlines how important these signings are to the club’s reset in the middle of the park.

United’s first major push focused on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, a pursuit that ultimately went nowhere. The type, though, was telling: a player comfortable as a holding midfielder, but just as effective stepping higher, linking play, and carrying the ball into dangerous areas.

Santos fits the same mould.

He can operate as a pure number 6, sitting in front of the back line, breaking up play, and recycling possession. He can also step into the number 8 role, driving forward, joining attacks, and pressing high. In an era that demands flexibility, he offers exactly that.

A modern hybrid with Chelsea pedigree

Chelsea saw the same qualities. Former manager Enzo Maresca highlighted Santos’ range early last season, after deploying him in a deeper role in one of their wins.

“Andrey was excellent. His position is the position he played today,” Maresca said. “With us most of the time he has been playing a little bit higher, in the pocket. In that [deeper] position we have Moi, so we try to find solutions for Andrey. We are aware his position is the one he played today.”

That assessment captures the dilemma Chelsea faced. They had a talented midfielder who could play both roles, but an established option already sitting deepest. Santos floated higher, into the pockets, adapting rather than owning a zone.

At United, Carrick appears ready to hand him that zone.

A changing of the guard

The departure of Casemiro closed one chapter in United’s midfield story. The Brazilian brought authority, experience and a big-game presence, but his exit has forced the club to confront the future more aggressively than perhaps they intended.

Ederson, once his move is finally pushed over the line, and Santos would represent a complete shift in profile: younger, more mobile, more versatile. Carrick, a former metronome in United’s midfield himself, is clearly shaping a unit that can press, cover space, and still use the ball with intelligence.

If Santos passes his medical and the deal is completed as expected, United will have invested heavily in a player still at the start of his Premier League journey. The gamble is that his ceiling justifies the outlay. The reward, if it pays off, is a midfield built to last.
