Manchester United Sign Baleba for £70m as Midfield Rebuild Accelerates
Manchester United have finally got their man. After two years of watching, weighing up and waiting, the Red Devils have completed the signing of midfielder Baleba from Brighton in a deal worth up to £70 million.
United will pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m tied to performance-related add-ons. The 22-year-old Cameroon international has signed on at Old Trafford until 2031, with the club holding an option to extend for a further year. It is a long-term bet on a player they have tracked closely since his early Premier League days.
Long chase, big statement
Baleba’s arrival ends a drawn-out pursuit that had become one of the recurring threads of recent United windows. Linked repeatedly with a move to Old Trafford since his breakthrough at Brighton, he now walks through the doors as the centrepiece of a major midfield overhaul.
He brings three full Premier League seasons with him. Brighton signed him from Lille in 2023 for an initial £23.2m, developed him, and have now sold him at a hefty profit. United, meanwhile, get the profile they wanted: young, powerful, and already hardened by English football.
This is not an isolated move. Baleba becomes the latest addition to a reshaped engine room that has already seen Andrey Santos arrive from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in the current window. The message is obvious: United are rebuilding the core of their side, and they are doing it aggressively.
Fernandes sets the tone
Inside the dressing room, the welcome has already begun. Bruno Fernandes, speaking at the PFA Awards after being named the 2026 Players' Player of the Year, did not hide his enthusiasm.
"He's a very energetic player. Strong physically, he can push us up the pitch driving the ball," Fernandes said. "Young and exciting, the club have been following him for two years."
Those lines tell their own story. This is not a panic buy after a bad result. This is a player the recruitment team and the captain have had their eye on for a long time, one they believe can change the tempo and direction of United’s play.
Answering a poor start
The timing, though, is impossible to ignore. United have stumbled out of the blocks this season, their campaign opening with a jarring 2-0 defeat away at promoted Hull City. On that day, Santos and Tielemans both started in midfield alongside Fernandes. The balance was off, the performance flat, and the result damaging.
Now comes Baleba, walking straight into a situation that demands impact. His integration will be central to Michael Carrick’s attempt to jolt United’s season into life. The expectation is clear: add drive, add legs, add bite.
United see him as the player who can carry the ball through pressure, turn defence into attack, and give Fernandes the freedom to operate higher up the pitch. If that happens, the whole structure shifts.
A new core for Carrick
With Baleba, Santos and Tielemans all through the door in one window, Carrick suddenly has options, combinations, and competition in an area that has too often looked tired and predictable.
This is the midfield he will be judged on. And for Baleba, this is the stage he has been moving towards since that first step from Lille to Brighton.
