Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70m

Manchester United have finally got their man.

Carlos Baleba is heading to Old Trafford from Brighton in a deal worth up to £70m, becoming the latest piece in a rapidly rebuilt United midfield and the third new signing in that department this summer after Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

The 22-year-old Cameroon international has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months. United will pay £65m up front, with a further £5m in add-ons and a sell-on clause agreed with Brighton, taking the club’s outlay on midfielders this summer to around £148m.

“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” he said. “Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.

“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. His experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.

“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”

United had tried to prise Baleba away from Brighton last summer, only to be firmly rebuffed when the south-coast club made it clear he would not be leaving. His form dipped last season, but United did not walk away. Instead, they waited, watched and, a week ago, moved decisively to revive their interest and close the deal.

The context around the transfer is stark. Casemiro has gone, Manuel Ugarte faces a long spell out with a serious knee injury, and United have responded with an aggressive midfield rebuild. Santos has arrived from Chelsea, Tielemans from Aston Villa, and now Baleba is the latest to be dropped into the heart of Carrick’s plans.

Inside the club, they are convinced they have secured a cornerstone for the next phase.

United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, said: “Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”

United wanted him last summer. They have paid big to land him this summer. Now the question is simple: can Baleba turn a dream move into the engine room that drives United’s next era?
