Manchester United's Summer Transfer Dilemma: Fernandes and Bouaddi

Manchester United’s summer plans are being squeezed from all sides. The targets are clear. The prices are anything but.

At the heart of it all sits Mateus Fernandes.

Fernandes chase stalls over £80m stand-off

United’s recruitment team remain locked in talks with West Ham over the midfielder, but the numbers are doing the damage. West Ham want £80million. United, according to multiple reports, are refusing to go that high.

Personal terms are not the problem. Fernandes is understood to be keen on the move and ready to make Old Trafford his next step. The stumbling block is simple: valuation.

Tottenham have sensed the hesitation. They are described as firmly in the race and, crucially, more relaxed about both the asking price and wage demands. As it stands, Spurs look to be ahead of United in the queue.

United’s stance is consistent with a wider pattern this window. They are trying to draw a line under the era of paying whatever it takes. The risk is obvious: while they argue over the fee, rivals move.

Bouaddi and the battle for tomorrow’s midfield

United do have an alternative to Fernandes on their list: Ayyoub Bouaddi. The problem is that half of Europe seem to have had the same idea.

RMC’s Fabrice Hawkins reports that Manchester City, Arsenal and Bayern Munich have all joined United in the chase for the Lille midfielder. Lille value Bouaddi between €80m (£69m) and €100m (£86m), and his World Cup performances for Morocco could yet nudge that figure higher.

Lille are open to selling, but with a condition. They would prefer to take the money now and keep the player on loan for another season to continue his development. Any club stepping forward must accept that delay in getting him through the door.

For United, who need immediate help in midfield, that complicates the equation. Bouaddi is a long-term play. Fernandes is a now signing. The market, and the prices, are forcing them to choose.

Ugarte injury rips up exit plan

The situation around Manuel Ugarte has added another layer of difficulty. United had earmarked the Uruguay midfielder for an exit this summer, a move expected to free up both a squad place and a transfer fee.

Those plans have been rocked.

Ugarte suffered a serious knee ligament injury at the World Cup, with the club confirming the blow last night. He is now likely to miss a significant period, and The Athletic report that the setback will affect United’s transfer strategy. A player once seen as a saleable asset is now an injured midfielder with an uncertain timeline.

Transfermarkt value Ugarte at €25m (£21m). In reality, that number is academic for now. Until he proves his fitness, any meaningful market for him is on hold.

Diomande, Amad and a World Cup shop window

Elsewhere at the World Cup, the spotlight has fallen on Yan Diomande, in camp with Ivory Coast alongside United’s Amad.

For Diomande, the tournament has not been straightforward. The 23-year-old has made three appearances, one from the bench and another cut short at half-time. Even so, his club situation has remained a talking point.

United had previously tracked the RB Leipzig star, only to move on. Liverpool then stepped into what looked like pole position, making clear their willingness to pay a significant fee, though not quite enough to meet Leipzig’s demands. Those demands are believed to be in excess of £100million, a figure that could rise further if Diomande continues to impress for his country.

Now, according to The Athletic, Diomande has chosen Paris Saint-Germain as his preferred destination if he moves this summer. United’s early decision to walk away from the numbers looks increasingly in line with their new financial discipline.

Milan links cool for Amad and Mount

Back in the United camp, transfer noise has followed Amad as well. Reports in Italy have suggested AC Milan interest, a move that would reunite him with former United boss Ruben Amorim. Mason Mount has also been mentioned as a potential Milan target, with Amorim known to be a long-time admirer.

Those stories have hit a wall.

It is being widely reported that there is no truth to the Milan links for either Amad or Mount at this stage. Milan’s energy is instead directed at closing a deal for Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain, leaving United’s pair on the fringes of the rumour mill rather than at the centre of it.

City confirm Anderson, United’s restraint vindicated

If there is one transfer saga that underlines United’s new refusal to overpay, it is Elliot Anderson.

United were strongly linked with the Nottingham Forest midfielder earlier this year but quickly stepped back once Forest’s demands became clear. That decision has now been framed in stark numbers.

Manchester City have moved in and are on the brink of completing the deal. The Telegraph report that Anderson has passed his medical, with City agreeing to pay Forest £116million.

Any thought of a late hijack has been shut down. The fee underlines why United exited the race so swiftly. On this one, their restraint looks less like caution and more like common sense.

Ederson deal done as United search for balance

Amid all the negotiations and near-misses, United have secured one significant midfield arrival. A £38.8m deal has been agreed with Atalanta for Brazil international Ederson, a signing that adds energy and bite to the centre of the pitch.

Ederson’s arrival does not end the search. It changes its shape.

With Ugarte’s injury affecting outgoings, Fernandes locked behind West Ham’s £80m wall, Bouaddi attracting Europe’s elite, and Diomande heading towards PSG, United’s margin for error is shrinking fast.

They want to stop overpaying. They also cannot afford to stand still.

The window will show which principle wins.
