Manchester United's Summer Window: Goalkeeping Changes and Winger Pursuit
Manchester United enter the final month of the summer window with the squad in flux, the goalkeeping department under the scalpel and a £42m winger potentially within reach.
Michael Carrick has already moved with intent. Five new signings are through the door as he reshapes a group that has drifted too often in recent seasons. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are the headline acts in a rebuilt midfield, tasked with giving United more control and craft in the centre of the pitch.
Behind them, Karl Darlow has arrived as seasoned cover for Senne Lammens, who ended last season as the undisputed No.1. United have also looked further down the line: teenage goalkeeper Kit Margetson and exciting winger Tynan Thompson point to a club trying to repair its succession planning after years of short-term fixes.
A restless goalkeeping room
For all that Lammens has tightened his grip on the shirt, the goalkeeping picture remains anything but settled. Andre Onana has gone back to Trabzonspor on loan, while Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek are being linked with moves away as United trim and recalibrate the depth chart.
Even with Darlow signed, the club’s recruitment team have been casting the net wide. Orlando Gill, the San Lorenzo goalkeeper who impressed for Paraguay at this summer’s World Cup, has emerged as one of the names on their list.
His agent, Mario Jara, has confirmed that United were among the clubs to make an approach, even if a move now looks unlikely.
“We are in talks with English clubs as well as clubs in Germany,” Jara told DSports Radio. “There were enquiries with Manchester United. We only received two concrete offers. We are currently in the negotiation phase.
“The sale is close, the time is right. We have to handle it very carefully because there are many things involved. It's ideal for him to take a step up in quality. He's prepared and capable of playing in any league, without a doubt.
“We're trying to finalise it as quickly as possible for everyone's benefit. It would be very important for San Lorenzo; hopefully, it will come to fruition.”
The message is clear: Gill is on the move, and big European clubs are circling. United, though, look set to watch that particular deal from a distance after moving early for Darlow.
Juventus business opens door for Conceicao
While the goalkeeping carousel spins in the background, the more intriguing storyline sits at the other end of the pitch.
United have been credited with interest in Francisco Conceicao, the 23-year-old winger who gave Juventus width, energy and unpredictability across 42 appearances last season. His future in Turin has been thrown into doubt as Juve reshape their own squad.
The Italian club are closing in on Bayer Leverkusen prospect Kerim Alajbegovic, a move that has forced them to confront the financial side of their rebuild. To balance the books, they are prepared to cash in on Conceicao.
That is where United come back into focus. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, both United and Liverpool have made enquiries, with Juventus setting an asking price in the region of £34m to £42m. For a player entering his prime, with Serie A and European experience behind him, that fee will tempt more than one Premier League sporting director.
A move to England is described as likely. The decision in Turin is a harsh one — selling a regular contributor to fund the next wave — but it is the sort of market tension United must exploit if Carrick is to add the kind of direct, high-tempo wide threat his squad still lacks.
