Marc Cucurella walked into Valdebebas on Thursday with the look of a man who knows exactly what this means. Medical passed, first training session under José Mourinho completed, the Spaniard finally stood in front of the cameras as a Real Madrid player and allowed himself to say it out loud.
“It is a source of pride,” he told Marca, the words carrying the weight of a childhood spent watching this club from the outside. “I think few people can say they have worn this shirt. We have watched great legends. It is a club with a great history, and the biggest club in Europe.”
For a boy formed at Barcelona’s famed academy, La Masia, the image is striking: a Catalan-bred full-back now calling the Bernabéu home. The journey has not been straightforward, and he made no attempt to hide how long he has been waiting for a moment like this.
“Being here today is a privilege and an honour, and above all a reward for all the effort I have put in throughout my career,” he said. “I have waited a long time, and it felt like it took a long time, but I am here now.”
From watching the magic to living it
For years, Cucurella watched those Real Madrid nights like everyone else: as a spectator, as a rival, as a kid glued to the television when the lights went up in Chamartín and something inexplicable seemed to happen.
“As a spectator, I saw all those magical nights, the comebacks at the Bernabéu, and all the Champions League titles the team has lifted,” he recalled.
Those memories have shaped his decision. The leap from admirer to protagonist is not lost on him. He knows exactly what he is stepping into.
“As a player, and as a child starting to play football, it is very difficult to turn down the chance to play for a club like this,” he continued. “The opportunity came to me and I did not hesitate for a moment. Getting the chance to live it from the inside and take part in it is a very big responsibility, but it is also a beautiful and important challenge.”
Responsibility and romance. That is the balance he will have to strike in a dressing room built to win now, not tomorrow.
Early days under Mourinho
The first taste of Mourinho’s Madrid came on the training pitch. No easing in, no soft launch. Just the Portuguese coach setting the tone and the new signing trying to catch every instruction.
Asked about those initial sessions, Cucurella’s answer was immediate.
“A lot of confidence and spontaneity,” he said of the environment Mourinho has created. “We have to do on the pitch what we are good at, and above all enjoy ourselves. I think what we all want is to win and to have a great year.”
